Saturday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7, offered a piercing examination of the treatment of believers and Christ. From the Old Testament lesson in Ezekiel, which referred to the evil posturing of the Pharaoh, who broke the backs of the Hebrew people, when they expected to be treated with respect. The Psalmist, David, cried unto the Lord for help in a difficult time.
The New Testament lesson in Luke was saddest of all. The very leaders of the Jews, which should have known about the Messiah, were the people who hated Jesus and sought to trip him up. Their phony face of religiosity and their hidden agendas of subterfuge created false images for the people. Jesus saw through their fake expressions and warned his disciples, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”
What does yeast (or leaven) do? It reproduces itself and it spreads like a virus, infecting everything it touches. Yeast in bread can be used for good. But it works at the cellular level, invisible to the eye, but working its way through the dough. Too much yeast causes bread to collapse on itself, or become tough and filled with holes and ruin the flavor.
The yeast of the Pharisees was not always apparent to everyone, but their negative influence, hypocritical ways undermined the Messiah’s message.
I have worked with people, who put on one face in front of people, but work to undermine you the minute they can. People, who are trusting, are blindsided.
Jesus saw through the Pharisees and tried to explain their duplicity to the disciples. The leaders, who seemed so good, were working to make the mission collapse.
We must be on guard by those who would work to make the mission collapse.
The Pharisees were not outside the faith. They were among the attendees of worship. So the warning was not against the heathen or the atheist, but against the ones who should be leaders of the faith. The very people we think we should be able to trust are the ones who will betray or undermine the Good News.
The goal of all people should be furthering the Gospel. Anything that detracts from that would be contrary to the Great Commission of making disciples. All that the church does can be measured against the simple goal question: Does this help make disciples?
These things require prayer for discernment. If not, beware and be cautious. If so, charge ahead.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Luke 11:53-12:3
King James Version (KJV)
53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
12 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, forgive us for the many ways we fail you. Help us not to be hypocritical but be honorable in our treatment of people so that we convey the Good News of the Gospel through our actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen
Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7 dealt with some of the harsher aspects of dealing with people we thought we could rely on. The Hebrews thought Egypt was a safe haven, but the Pharaoh treated them poorly—broke their backs.
The Psalmist, David, cried out that things were not going well and yet, he came to the conclusion that God would work all things out.
The New Testament lesson carried that same theme of good ending to a bad situation. Jesus cautioned his disciples of the two-faced, hypocritical nature of the Pharisees. But he ended with the fact that there would come a time that all the things that were hidden would be revealed. The true believers would shine. The false leaders would become evident. We can trust the work of God to expose the falsehood. In the meantime, we press forward doing whatever God has called us to do.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
