New to PCOs......I was just started on Metformin. I was wondering how will I know if it's making a difference? After what time frame will I see a difference? This is all new to me I am just wondering what I should look for and if it's really helpful to people with PCOS. My goal is to loose weight to increase my chances of having a baby. Any input will be helpful.
Thanks

Sunshine, sorry I didn't see this sooner. I am a metformin success story of sorts. I have 2 beautiful children from it. For me it took about 3 months to start seeing regular cycles, although still too long at 35-40 days. Eating a healthy diet and exercising will help too. I will try to send you a friend request. I feel bad this post slipped past me.0

Metformin does one thing, and one thing only -- increases insulin sensitivity.
So, if your doctor didn't get your fasting insulin (note - not glucose) tested, then you won't really have any consistent, objective way of knowing whether it works.
However, because insulin resistance is the big reason women with PCOS can't lose weight (and often a major factor in their other hormones getting disrupted), then you may see its effects via weight loss, the reappearance or stabilization of periods, or other effects of less dysfunctional hormones. Keep in mind, though, that the absence of many of these effects may not be because the Metformin isn't working, which is why I say knowing your fasting insulin is king for this purpose.
As for time frame, that depends entirely on how you respond to it. Some women respond well to the initial dose of 500mg, while others don't respond to anything below 2000mg. Once you get a dosage that you do respond to, though, the general time for seeing the effects is about a month, sometimes two.0
