Meditation
Tuesday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7, continued the life and progeny of Ishmael and addressed the angel from the Church at Smyrna.
As a kid growing up reading the Bible through in a year, I always sped through the begats and the genealogies. I wondered why they would spend so much time with them. Of course, it seemed moderately important to a teenager to know what the generations of David to Jesus. Besides, I knew many of the names—Boaz, Jesse, David, Solomon, Absalom etc.
But I remember hearing my Aunt Marguerite tell the story of when she served in the 1940s in China as a missionary. A man came into her town, clasping a piece of a book. It contained a genealogy…a fragment—no more than a couple of verses.
He asked around if anyone knew of the book. My aunt looked at it and identified it as an Old Testament book. He wanted to know more, because he said that anyone who spent so much time on where they came from must be very important. He learned about Jesus and salvation; he made a profession of faith. All from genealogies. God uses everything to further the work of the Gospel.
To the angel of the church of Smyrna, he sympathized with their lack of funds and general loss of stature in the community. “You are poor” by earth’s standards, but in fact, they were rich by God’s standards. In fact, the very people that point the finger of hate, Jesus identified as working for Satan. People of religiosity—whether Jew or Christian—won’t end out well. Even when believers suffer on earth, they will have great reward in heaven.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Revelation 2:8-11
King James Version (KJV)
8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Conclusion
Tuesday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7 dealt with some harsh realities of Ishmael’s life and the fighting between siblings and their progeny. The wars continued thousands of years later. It was sad. But the good news was in the New Testament Revelation of John that despite the appearance of things seeming awful; despite long suffering and ridicule from earthly people, the future is brighter.
God has a reward for those who are victorious against the challenges of Satan. We fight the good fight and defeat the evil we encounter; then we will enjoy great things in heaven. We can be encouraged, even when our situations appear horrible.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
