Wednesday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7, the prophet Jeremiah instructed the Israelites to stay away from going into Egypt, explaining that there would be danger for Jews, a risk of death by sword, disease or hunger. Life can be a challenge for people of faith. The New Testament lesson in Matthew echoed a similar refrain. Jesus sent the twelve disciples out for their first chance to witness about the Good News. He established a few basic rules—start with the Jewish towns first. Heal sick and cast out devils. Don’t take your money with you; expect that people will provide for you. Don’t pack a suitcase or belongings, but carry only the message. The Kingdom of Heaven is near. If you are accepted, go with them to their home. If you are rejected, dust yourself off and leave.
An amazing epilogue was that people, who rejected them, were going to receive greater punishment than Sodom and Gomorrah.
Jesus noted that he was sending them as sheep among wolves. The same leaders that hated Jesus would hate them. They would try to undermine them, arrest them and kill them, but they were not to worry. “If they needed words to say, God would give them the right words.”
Families would turn against each other on the issues of choosing to follow Christ or not.
Jesus wasn’t painting a good future by earthly standards. The work would be hard. The rewards would be few on earth, but the rewards for endurance would be great in heaven.
We may face the similar circumstances where people don’t accept us because of our faith, but we don’t need to worry, either. The truth remains firm, God will provide for our needs—the words to say or the coat on our back. We can count on God, just as the disciples did.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

3When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
5You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor. Human beings that you care for them?

Matthew 10:5-23
King James Version (KJV)
5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.
13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we feel the challenge of sharing the Good News and often lose our courage. Thank you for your promise to give us the words when we need them. Empower us to grow strong in our faith and trust you all the more. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Conclusion
Wednesday, Ordinary 12/Proper 7 revealed the harsh realities of the believer. Jesus never promised a smooth path or an easy time of it. Quite the contrary, Jesus said that it would be quite difficult, but no amount of difficulty would be too great for God to guide a believer through. Endurance was the goal and the ultimate rewards would be in Heaven and they would be beyond imagination.
It may be tough to think beyond the challenge, the hardship and the journey, but Jesus promised that salvation would be the reward for those who remained faithful. The Sudanese woman, Meriam Ibrahim remained faithful. Her testimony was broadcast around the world. Billions of people know the power of God and the Good News because of her suffering for Christ. I suspect her reward will be humongous. Thanks be to God for her recent release.
