Meditation
Sunday, Ordinary 13/Proper 8, examined believer’s faith. It asked the question, “How much do you trust God?” The Psalmist, David, started with his despair but ended with his remembering God’s goodness and placing all his faith in God and thereby glorifying him.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans how they should avoid sin, even though they had grace covering every sin. Some had suggested that they didn’t have to work at being faithful because grace covered everything. Paul insisted that they should work to do well, because they were no longer slaves to sin, but would desire to do what was good out of obedience to God.
The Old Testament lesson told of a test God had for Abraham’s faithfulness. God asked Abraham to give up the son he had waited so long for—this precious child that had been born to Sarah when she was well past her years of normally giving birth. Could Abraham give him up?
Abraham went up the mountain leaving his servants behind. Even Isaac noticed the oddness and commented, “We have wood. We have fire. Where is the lamb to sacrifice?”
The words of Abraham’s absolute trust in God were, “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering….” And the Lord did provide a ram. Abraham was pushed to the limit, but he stayed true in his faith.
Our lives may be called to demonstrate our faith and we must ask for the strength to be like Abraham, David and Paul, rising to any occasion to show our faith in God.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Genesis 22:1-14
King James Version (KJV)
22 And it came to pass after these things that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his *kitten*, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the *kitten*; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we praise your name for you saved David, Abraham and Paul many times through their lives. You asked for their faithfulness and they obliged. Help us to be like them and demonstrate our faith in you. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 13/Proper 8 asked the question of each believer. “How much faith do you have?” For David, Abraham and Paul, they responded with everything they had. They proved their faith over and over again.
The same questions can be asked of us. How much do we trust God? If put to the test, how would we fair?
We have the examples of how God worked in Abraham, David and Paul’s lives. They were put through various challenges, but they remained faithful and God blessed them. We seek the same kind of blessing in our lives.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
