Meditation
Wednesday, Ordinary 13/Proper 8, reminded believers that “to whom much is given, much will be expected.” The Psalmist celebrated the power and greatness of God, whose miraculous actions of creation established the throne of God for all nations.
The Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, called for the children of Israel to return to the behaviors of Abraham. The chosen people of God had been given the land. God had provided for their needs. As Abraham was blessed, they could be blessed, but they needed to return to the ways of Abraham, so they would see the land flourish with rivers and gardens. The people would be happy and sing for joy.
We know from the sadness in Israel that those days are still in the future. I feel so sorry for the parents and the families of the teenagers in Israel who were kidnapped on their way home from school and executed. We must pray for the Lord to return Israel to the days of Abraham as Isaiah prophesied, so that the people would be happy and sing for joy, instead of filled with fear and sorrow.
The New Testament lesson was an indictment by Jesus of the people, who should have known better. He spoke to the Jews in Israel, who refused to accept the truth about him. He was losing his patience and finally declared that their future would be worse than Sodom and Gomorrah.
To whom much was given, much was expected. Jesus was coming to his own people. He was a nice Jewish boy, raised on the Torah and the Prophets. He came to save his own, and many of his own dismissed him, failed to believe and refused to follow him.
Jesus noted that if the miracles he had done for his people had been done in Tyre, Sidon, Sodom and Gomorrah, they would have changed their ways and turned their hearts to the Lord.
Instead, he indicts the cities that rejected him.
We must examine ourselves, as well. I grew up in the church. I didn’t grow up with parents, who drank, swore and were irresponsible. I was blessed with godly parents. Because of it, more was expected of me. We have the full Scriptures. We have the stories of the Old and New Testament which teach us the laws of God, so more is expected of us.
The responsibility is ours to learn and obey, making disciples of others, so that more will learn and follow Jesus.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, Jesus came to the Jew first and then to the rest of the nations. Many, who should have known better, did not follow him. Many who grow up in Christian circles today have failed to please you and follow you as we should. Help us to be like Abraham and serve you in a way that teaches others of the miracles you have done for us. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Wednesday, Ordinary 13/Proper 8 reinforced the lesson from the Psalmist to the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, to the Gospel lesson in Matthew where Jesus indicted his own, saying that they should know better.
Much had been given to the Jews. Jesus expected more from the cities that rejected him. He said there would be worse things happening to them than the most terrible cities he could think of—Tyre, Sidon, Sodom and Gomorrah.
How great a sadness he must have felt for the people, who should have known better about following him, and yet refused.
We, who should know better, should expect that we will be held accountable for the wrong we do, the hurt we cause and the pain we inflict—none of which is following in Jesus’ footsteps. On the other hand, if we follow Jesus, there will be great rewards. The land will become like the Garden of Eden. People will be happy and sing songs for joy.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
