Thursday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9, demonstrated the two ways of doing things. The Old Testament lesson in Genesis told of the pregnancy and birth of Esau and Jacob. Before they were born, they fought with each other in the womb. Rebecca asked if there was something wrong, and God replied that she was carrying the seed of two nations. They would be at war. Abraham had two children that have been at war since birth. Now, Isaac gave birth to two that also would be at war. Esau (meaning the hairy one) was the elder of the twins. Jacob sounding like ‘heel’ and followed Esau’s birth clutching his heel. The concept of “grabbing one’s heel” was an idiomatic phrase meaning “one, who follows” or “is tricky.”
The two opposing spirits are born and their interests are as radically opposite as two brothers could be—one, a hunter, who loved the outdoors; the other, a quiet indoor type.
The New Testament lesson in the Epistle to Romans spoke of the differences between living under the law and living under the Grace of Christ. Just as a woman, whose husband had died was freed from responsibility to that marriage, and chose to remarry, she would be free to enjoy all the relationship and responsibility of the new relationship.
We have been saved under the grace of Jesus Christ and our allegiance is to Christ more than the old laws. While Jesus reinforced some of the basic tenants of putting God first, things such as worshipping on Saturday changed to worship on Sunday in celebration of the resurrection of Christ on Sunday. Many of the Jewish rituals—especially those of purification that the Pharisees accused Jesus and his disciples of not maintaining—were no longer required. They had been accused of eating with unclean hands. Or things such as picking grain on the Sabbath because they were hungry. All the “laws” that were rigid gave way to grace that was freeing.
We have true freedom in Christ and we were created to be of great service to Christ. As a bride enjoyed doing things for her loving husband, we can enjoy serving our Lord and Savior in this new relationship.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Romans 7:1-6
King James Version (KJV)
7 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, Jesus died to save us and free us from the many restrictions in the law. Now we can live out of love for Christ instead of duty to the law. Empower us to do your will and serve you in a way that pleases you. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Thursday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9 celebrated freedom from the law while showing the contrast of ways that people will fight. The enmity between brothers. The way that Christians treat other Christians with judgment, not based on the core teaching of the Scriptures but on isolated phrases that aren’t definitive. With harshness, people prefer legalism to grace. Some churches have dress codes. Others restrict activities.
In fact, Christ set us free. Free to serve our Lord and Savior. Free to live and be responsible and representative of the goodness of the Gospel. Christ set us free.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
