Friday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9, provided a mixed offering of hopefulness and wariness. Hopeful for the opportunities, but wary for the obstacles and snares.
The Psalmist directed the Princess how to prepare herself for her husband and ready herself to be the first of a great nation. Many would praise her by her proper preparation.
In many lessons over the years, planning, preparation plus execution equaled success. The Princess was directed to be prepared and the outcome would be that nations would praise her.
The Old Testament lesson told of the trickery of Jacob in cahoots with his mother, Rebecca, continued the idea of preparation and planning results in a successful execution. As the second son, Jacob was not entitled to the inheritance. Despite the fact that he was only minutes younger, the estate went to the elder child.
This lesson dealt with the preparation and plotting of Jacob. Isaac had sent Esau, the older twin, to go hunting for a fine animal to make into a feast. Rebekah plotted to have her favorite son, Jacob, receive the blessing.
One of the interesting aspects of the Scriptures was that they didn’t hide the bad behaviors of people, even when God works those bad behaviors into the ultimate blessing. God could have found many ways to see that Jacob received the blessing, but he allowed the sneakiness and trickery of Rebekah and Jacob to prevail. God works with us as we are. We can serve God’s will even when we fail to be faithful to the law of God and trusting of God’s purpose. We never have to worry that our failures would prevent God from doing something great because we have so many examples of how people’s failings were worked into the plan of God.
The New Testament lesson hammered it home. Paul wrote that he didn’t do the things he wanted to do, but did the wrong things instead. The constant fight within us between the old self and the new self. The new-self desired to please God. The old-self didn’t care and was more interested in personal pleasure.
The law pointed out the sin, otherwise he wouldn’t have recognized it, but the grace that he received from Jesus made him desire to do better and live by the spirit of the law. But he failed. Often.
We could take comfort in the fact that no matter how messed up we make things, God can work them together for our good.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

King James Version (KJV)
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, we have failed to do what is right in many ways. Forgive us Lord. Instead fill us with your Spirit that we might succeed and achieve what pleases you, for we are grateful that we have received salvation and wish to do the correct thing instead of the wrong. Bless us with your grace. In Jesus name, Amen

I hope you found a chance to encounter your Creator and experience the Love of God and the joy of Christ in Ordinary 14/Proper 9.
Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9 set up the examples of Rebekah, Jacob and Paul, who did what they shouldn’t have done. “The Devil made me do it”expression fit their lives. They made bad choices, influenced by wrong desires. They wanted to do what was according to the law, but they did what was wrong.
God worked through them all. Their mistakes were used to further the work of God. The same is true for us. God can use our service where we are and make something beautiful for God.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
