Hello, I'm new. I feel discouraged…somehow I'm 180 pounds. How did that happen? I don't know if it's my fault or if I should blame it on Hashimoto's. I just kicked a thyroid doctor to the curb that I'd been seeing for about 5 years with no results (suing for medical malpractice was considered; not being dramatic, totally serious) and now I have a better one with whom I'm very happy and he just started tweaking with my levels and so on. I'm on 50 mcg of Synthroid for severe hypothyroid which I started about two weeks ago. I haven't seen any change at all and I'm not sure when I should start seeing any. I'm so glad I found this group, though. If any of you have any advice or wisdom to impart, I'm open. Just very worried and unsure of myself. Weight loss has never been something I've had to try at before and I feel that somehow I've failed, which I know isn't true but that feeling won't leave me. I'm also really anxious about exercise. I'm kind of afraid of it...

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease). I lost way more slowly than most MFPers, but I did it just like everybody else—by logging everything I eat & drink accurately & honestly.

The advice in this post worked for me:

    MFP has another thyroid group:

I'm not a doctor but for me taking armour thyroid with synthroid has been key. I too have Hashimotos. I started on just armour and eventually added synthroid as well. The armour brings up the T3 which allows the body to use the T4, or something along those lines. Don't know just how it works, but it does. Did your dr just do TSH or run T3/T4 as well? That's a critical question as to how you're treated and how you will feel. Don't give it much longer before you go back! You shouldn't have to suffer!

Synthroid (levothyroxine) is synthetic T4. Cytomel (liothyronine) is synthetic T3. Armour is dessicated pig (or pig + cow) thyroid glands.

I had the same problem. I was working out/eating right, no results. My last blood test I was prediabetic. I never expected to be in that category at 30. I hadn't been sleeping through the whole night. I had very high cortisol levels. I was deficient in multiple vitamin levels. My new doctor, I fired the last, started me on cytomel with a higher dose levothyroxine and a vitamin regimen to fix the areas that were lacking. I am also doing an 80/20 grain diet. I am 80% grain free but don't deprive myself completely. I cut out all not naturally occurring sugars. I feel awesome. I am sleeping the entire night. I have lost 13lbs in about 4 weeks. Now I have to wait and see if the blood tests show positive results as well.
