Saturday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9, gave us a peak into the tradition of bestowing blessings. The Psalmist showed how blessings would come to people because of the great relationship of the Princess with the King.
Jesus spoke to his followers in the New Testament lesson about how blessed they were because of their unique opportunity to be with him in person. He started the lesson with joy brought him by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus was happy and wanted to share that with his followers.
The blessing of being in his presence and being privy to so many lessons from the Father.
In the Old Testament lesson, Jacob tricked his father Isaac into receiving the formal blessing of the father to the inheriting son. It was a vow made before God and therefore more important and unbreakable. It was a blessing that gave everything to Jacob as well as all the protections of God and the blessings that the first son, Esau should have had.
Jacob pretended to be like Esau, covering his clean arms with animal skin to smell and feel like his hairy brother. Since Isaac’s eyes were failing, the smell and touch of the animal skin over Jacob’s arm was enough to fool him and he bestowed the blessing on Jacob, who then became the next patriarch in Abraham and Isaac’s line.
God’s blessing, a blessing made in a vow to God becomes inviolate and unchangeable. This culture doesn’t place as much value on one’s word, and certainly not a ‘blessing’ by a father, but it would be the equivalent of a legal will in a court of law today.
The power of the blessing remains something we can experience because of our relationship with Jesus.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

King James Version (KJV)
18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?
19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy first born; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.
24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.
27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, thank you for the blessings we receive in Jesus. Thank you for the happiness in the Holy Spirit. Empower us to do our best in all that we do for you. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9 the lesson enumerated the blessings of Isaac to Jacob and of Jesus on his followers. We are the beneficiaries of the blessing. Just as Jesus was joyous in the Holy Spirit, so can we feel the joy because of the Holy Spirit. Like Jacob, we can be the beneficiaries, even if we are not deserving. The blessing is there. It is a done deal. We can count on it.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
