Meditation
Tuesday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9, continued the story of Jacob fleeing his sneaky dealings with his father, Isaac, and brother, Esau, and coming to his mother’s home country. He met up with shepherds and saw Rachel in the distance. When he asked who she was, he discovered she was his cousin, the daughter of his mother’s brother, Laban.
He did her the service of removing the well-stone so she could water her sheep. Then he revealed who he was and she raced to inform her father, who greeted Jacob with a warm welcome.
It helps to be connected.
The Old Testament lesson in Song of Solomon shared the special connections of the bride and love in the passage most often read for marriages. When truly connected, even the pounding rush of waters that could etch a river canyon out of a mountain or the power of a Niagara Falls pounding over the cliff could not quench the flow of love.
The New Testament lesson to the church in Rome expanded the concept of connections with God. First the Jews connected with God as the chosen people, but not all Jews followed God faithfully. God remained true, though. Connections with God remained solid regardless of what bad they did. They could repent and call upon the Lord at any time and God would be true to the promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Even today, the Lord remains true to the Promises. When God speaks, we can trust the Word. Now some might try to blame God for the wrong that happens since God is sovereign, but that would not be accurate. Our wrong is our doing, not God’s. We can go to God for assistance, and know that we can rely on the truth of God’s promise. That’s what connections do.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Genesis 29:1-14
King James Version (KJV)
29 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.
3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.
4 And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
5 And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.
9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she kept them.
10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.
13 And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, even as Laban welcomed Jacob, you welcome us into your loving arms. We give you thanks and praise for your gracious promises and the blessings you bestow on us. Help us to make you proud. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Tuesday, Ordinary 14/Proper 9 reminded us of the pleasures of good connections, be they romantic or spiritual. We are grateful for the ways that we can count on the God, who loved the Jews enough to forgive them repeatedly when they disobeyed. We know that even when we fail, we too will find redemption if we confess our sins. Then God can do power things—bringing things to happen, like the “chance meeting of cousins at the watering hole.” Laban was Jacob’s salvation, even as God is our salvation and protector.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
