Sunday, Ordinary 15/Proper 10, dealt with the various ways that people react to the Spirit or the guidance of God. The Psalmist acknowledged that God’s laws were good and made the commitment to obey them He was open to the Spirit of God and willing to follow the direction of the Law of God.
The Old Testament lesson about Esau selling his birthright to Jacob showed Esau’s disrespect of the laws. He sold his birthright for a cup of soup. To disregard what God had made for elder sons to have, Esau demonstrated a callous indifference to the potentially wonderful things in store.
The New Testament lesson in Romans revealed that there are entitlements when we are Christ-followers. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we have access to the throne of God. We are set free because of what Christ did for us.
In the Gospel lesson in Matthew, the various reactions of people to the hearing of the Word of God were demonstrated in the parable of the Sower sowing the seed. The disciples didn’t understand what Jesus meant and asked him to explain. The sower was delivering the Good News in the seed. Some bypassed the hearers – because it didn’t take root. The birds ate the seeds even as life devoured what they heard and they didn’t retain it. Other recipients reacted by being hard/stony ground and the seeds took root, but not deep enough, so they had no reserves when the sun scorched them. The Word of God had didn’t penetrate into their lives enough to have staying power. Some received the Word but thorns—things of the world—choked them so they had no staying power. Still others received the Word and it fell into good soil, where people paid attention, integrated it into their lives and made changes accordingly. The results were that it produced much more –thirty, sixty or a hundred times as much.
How we treat the Word of God determines the outcome. We can be like Esau and dismiss and trade it. We can be like the Psalmist who promised to obey it. We can be like the seed that produce a hundred fold. It depends on how we respond to what God offers. Great things can happen if we trust it.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

13 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Almighty God, we are grateful for the many ways you offer the Word to us. Help us to be all we should be and receive it, internalize it and transform ourselves. We are grateful for your kindness to us. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 15/Proper 10 demonstrated a series of ways we can receive the Good News. Esau was hot and tired when he arrived home from the hunt. Jacob used the smells of his soup to lure Esau into trading away his birthright.
Like the seeds of Mathew, the birthright became a thing that fell by the wayside. Esau discarded it without care. The “birds” ate up his worth. He lost his way. He squandered the opportunity to be something special.
We have these passages to remind us that we have to be obedient to the Word of God, or there are severe losses. When we are obedient to the Word of God, we will be able to see amazing results—hundreds of times what we might expect.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
