Meditation
Thursday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 faced the reality that humans cannot hide from God. We may be able to keep secrets from each other, but we cannot go anywhere that God cannot see. From the highest mountain to the deepest sea, God knows us. Even when we are in complete darkness and cannot see a thing, the darkness to God is as bright as the day. God doesn’t need x-rays or infrared to find us. He can see us wherever we are.
Nothing can be hid from God. Nothing. Can. Be. Hid. From. God.
The Psalmist acknowledged that even before we ‘think our thoughts’ God knows them.
When I was on my first carrier in the Navy, I reflected on what I would say for evening prayer at sea. I chose Psalm 139 and changed it to reflect the ship.
8 If I ascend up to the bridge, thou art there: if I go down into the deepest JP-5 holds, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning and fly high in an F-14, and submerge in the submarine in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness of “darken ship” shall cover me; even the passageways shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
Whatever our circumstances, we know that God is keenly aware of everything. Some might say, if God knows everything, why should we pray? God knows what I am thinking, why should I have to ask? God doesn’t need us to ask, but he does ask that we ask.
I go back to Ralphie in A Christmas Story. His mother didn’t want to give him a Red Ryder B. B. gun, because he could shoot his eye out. His father agreed he could shoot his eye out. But Ralphie was persistent. His desire showed them his seriousness and willingness to do what it took to get the BB gun.
In a similar way, God, who knows what is best for us and knows our thoughts before we think them, but he listens to our requests to see how serious we are, or as we used to say, see how much skin we put in the game. God can act without our requests and sometimes does, but for our good, we must express our thoughts to God.
Our Scripture verses are about asking God to search and test us to lead us in the correct way forever.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Psalm 139:23-24

Psalm 139:1-12
King James Version (KJV)
139 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, you are so illimitable there is no place we can hide from you. The Psalmist asked for you to search his heart and see if there was wrong doing, and then leading him in the paths of righteousness. We ask for the same for us. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Thursday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 acknowledged the amazing relationship of God and humans. The Psalmist recognized the infinite wisdom, the omniscient power of God and yet humans mattered. Why would God care so much for us? We were created a little lower than the angels. Jesus, for a time, came to earth as a human—a little lower than the angels, so he could be the perfect sacrifice on everyone’s behalf. God demonstrated his care for us in that the only begotten son, Jesus, died on our behalf. “Greater love hath no one that one would give one’s life for a friend” was never truer than Jesus’ atoning death and resurrection.
If we could imagine the greatest King or Queen on earth—any of the ruling families—being so interested in people in their countries to give their most precious son as a sacrifice for the wrong-doings of the people, it would seem amazing, but God did it for the entire world.
That is how much we are cared for. God is with us, always.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
