Friday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 brought God into the open. In the Old Testament, the tabernacle held the Holy of Holies—with the mercy seat of God behind the curtain. Only the high priests were allowed access after purifying rituals. The author of Hebrews spoke of how God made a promise to Abraham and swore an oath on his own name, because there was no one higher to swear by.
The prophet Ezekiel relayed the words from God to the children of Israel about how God would return his chosen people from exile back to the land where they would be protected. Nations could fight them, but they would be safe, because the Lord’s promise was sure and could be counted upon.
In fact, Ezekiel promised that God would no longer hide from Israel. And we learn in Hebrews that Jesus was the way that the curtain in the tabernacle was rent giving us access to God. God was no longer hidden. Christ had opened the curtain because he served as a priest (after the order of Melchizedek, who met with Abraham).
The hope of believers rested in the promise of God, who was not hidden and who would return them to the land and keep them safe.
For us today, we can rely on the same promise. God will preserve us and keep us safe and we can take it to the bank, because the promises of God are true and worthy of being believed.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Hebrews 6:13-20
King James Version (KJV)
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, we count on your promises and believe in your truths. We are safe in your arms and give thanks that Jesus tore the curtain so we have access to your throne. We ask for help to bring honor to you. In Jesus name, Amen
.
Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 reminded us of our access to God. In the Old Testament, there was not the easy entrée, because the tabernacle required only the priests to enter the Holy of Holies. But Jesus opened the door to God for all of us and now we can interact with God whenever we need.
Jesus made all things possible because he served as a priest (like Melchizedek did for Abraham) and made entrance to the Kingdom of God feasible. We have access to the highest power in the universe, and God has promised to keep us safe and protected. We can take courage to do whatever we believe we are called to do for God.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
