Sunday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 offered a view of the relationships of the chosen people of God with the Almighty. The story of Jacob having a dream of angels climbing up and down a ladder to heaven while God stood alongside it and repeated the promise made to Abraham. “I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;”
The Psalmist called attention to the ways that humans could not hide from God, and the access that believers have to the Lord.
The New Testament epistle to the Romans addressed the disparity between living a life of sin versus a life following the Holy Spirit. Living such a life as children of God opened the door to the blessings of a child of God.
However, there would be challenges because of being followers of Christ. The suffering of the present world would not be significant when compared to the future blessings. While believers suffer, all of creation suffered too. Sin affects the land we live on, the water we drink, the air we breathe.
Corporations that take shortcuts and risk the lives of children and people that live around them, by polluting the land so that they can have profits, are a part of the sin that affects our world.
But the gospel lesson in Matthew spoke to that issue. Jesus told a parable about the farmer who sowed wheat, but an enemy stole into the field and planted weeds. For a time, the farmer allowed the weeds (tares) to grow with the wheat, because pulling out the weeds too soon would endanger the wheat plants. But at harvest, the weeds and the wheat would be separated out, preserved and the weeds burned. The definitive what goes around comes around.
Sins harm people and the environment.
But believers can hold onto the promise of Abraham that God would be with us. Jacob’s dream of angels ascending and descending to heaven reminds us that we are never alone and our angels have access to heaven. Believers know that the suffering now will result in blessings later.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Genesis 28:10-19
King James Version (KJV)
10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we give you thanks that you have promised us your protection and we can count on that despite the sufferings we might endure. We give you praise for your wisdom at work in our lives. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 managed to encompass the beautiful prophecy of Jacob’s dream of God’s faithfulness to the New Testament challenges and sufferings, and the need to hold firm with faith and trust the Lord to work in hearts and lives. We don’t need to worry about the weeds among the plantings, but know that God has devised a plan—even like the promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—to burn the tares and salvage the wheat.
No current suffering will compare to the future blessings that the Lord has in store.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
