Meditation
Tuesday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 reinforced the message that God has a plan. For everyone. For the Psalmist there was the realization that he could not hide from God…that God knew every aspect of his life.
In the Old Testament lesson, Jacob and Rachel have Benjamin, but Rachel died in childbirth. She wanted to name the son ‘child of my suffering’ but Jacob named his as a favorite child, Benjamin. He had eleven other sons from Leah and her maid, Zilpha, Rachel and her maid, Bilhah. They became the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob and Esau buried their father, Isaac, when he passed away. And so began the expansion of the great nation that God had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God—involved in every aspect of life.
The New Testament lesson in Matthew brought Jesus into the forefront with descendants of the children of Israel. The Pharisees had criticized Jesus for healing a man’s withered hand on a Sunday and were plotting against him. Jesus knew—just as nothing is hid from God—their adversarial position. The division between those who saw Jesus as the Messiah and those who saw him as trouble for their positions of power was growing.
Jesus came with a quiet assurance. He didn’t shout. He didn’t demand that people give him the honor due him. But he did continue in his quest for those who wanted to be saved. In fact, he would be the one to add the Gentiles to the family of God. The family Abraham fathered, Isaac and Jacob begat, had become a great nation. Jesus expanded it to include the non-Jews; expanded it to include all those who put their belief in him—Jew first, and then the Greek.
No one could hide from God and the choices that people made demonstrated where they fell into the family of God. We are responsible for our choices, too. The Pharisees that believed—like Nicodemus and Saul/Paul—were included. Those that rejected the words of the Son of God would find themselves before the dispenser of justice. Jesus didn’t have to shout. He had the power.
Years ago, a group of us went out to dinner and I met a college age guy who had his seventh degree black belt. People taunted him to show his ‘stuff’ but he remained quiet and calm, never showing off and never responding to the taunts. He was soft spoken. He had the power in his hands—a force that required them to be registered as lethal weapons. But his confidence didn’t require he shout it out or argue with the belligerent characters that tried to goad him into using his skill for frivolous whims.
God knows all. Sees all. Jesus had the power, but he didn’t use it frivolously. He didn’t have to brag about his position of power, his future position of judgment of all and his soon to be gift of salvation in his sacrifice on the cross.
Some of us were born into the chosen family of God; others of us were adopted. Regardless of our position in the family, we have access to the one true God, Lord of all. The God, who sees everything and gave Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, as the pure sacrifice for the sins of us all.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Matthew 12:15-21
King James Version (KJV)
15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16 And charged them that they should not make him known:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we are humbled by the way you are so far above us and yet love us enough to provide a way to be saved. You know all and we can’t hide our faults from you, yet you care for our everyday lives. May we bring honor to your name and be good witnesses for you. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Tuesday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 puts all the players in place from the beginning of the promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob about becoming a great nation to Jesus the lamb of God as a sacrifice for our sins, who quietly fulfilled his part of the job.
His position as the Messiah, the representative of God, his being the Son of God with all the power of God, was not something he bragged about or argued with people about. He slipped away from the unbelievers, when they plotted. He surrounded himself with those who would follow him. We have the joy of being a part of the family of God and tapping that power that is omniscient and omnipresent.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
