Thursday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 looked to the comparisons of words versus actions. Many people can make promises, but God kept his promises. The Psalmist praised God for keeping his promises. He was recounting the promises of God that had come to pass. The children of Israel had returned to the land promised them. God’s word was true.
The Old Testament lesson brought Jacob to meet Rachel for the first time. He gathered with the shepherds at the watering well. Jacob asked about his Uncle Laban and the shepherds pointed out that his daughter, Rachel was arriving.
The words of Jacob were that they should not uncover the well until later—mid day was too soon, but his words and actions would alter the way he did things.
Many people’s actions and words could be different, but not God’s. People could change their minds and so their actions would change. People could exaggerate about their skills and the actions would not match their words.
In the New Testament lesson in Corinthians, Paul admonished them about getting puffed up. Arrogance was a trouble in the church back then, too. There were many teachers saying different things, but Paul pointed out that only God was 100% true. Other teachers might make mistakes and their words and actions wouldn’t match up, but God’s word could be counted on. Paul noted that though there were many different teachers, he was the only one that fathered them into the faith. Teachers could go wrong, so he had sent Timothy to help them remember what Paul had taught them. Then, he gave a challenge. Those big talking teachers would have to face him in reality very soon.
All talk and no show. Some people who are arrogant leave no room for discovery of truth. They already know all the answers, so they can’t handle when things are different. Over the course of time, Christians have arrogantly claimed to know the truth of what God’s word has said. Some claimed to know the time when Christ would return—selling their possessions and waiting for the rapture. Others claimed to know that God approved of people owning other people—suggesting the Bible said so. Slavery in the Bible was more like ‘servanthood’ than the African American slavery. People sold their services for a number of years in exchange for money to their families. That was not the same as kidnapping people and claiming they were called to be slaves.
Some Christians arrogantly argue against science suggesting the Bible is against science. I posit that God made science so it should support the interpretations of the Bible. But people arrogantly argue untenable opinions.
As Christians we are called to study the Word of God and be open to the leading of the Spirit. We need not worry about the contrariness of arrogant people. God teaches truths. We can count on them.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Conclusion
Thursday, Ordinary 16/Proper 11 celebrates the ways that we can count on God for guidance. The Psalmist acknowledged the history of the children of Israel and how God had been there. The Old Testament lesson demonstrated the way that God led Jacob to Laban’s house—to the location where he would meet his future wife. God’s promises were true.
The New Testament lesson chided the Corinthians for their arrogance, their reliance on teachers that spoke with a lot of hot air, but didn’t actually perform as well as they claimed. Paul was going to meet them face to face and watch their reactions to his ‘fatherhood’ stance on their instruction. They would soon become aware.
We could learn from these examples. We must be cautious about getting stuck in the old ways ‘just because’ and be open to the leading of the Spirit.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
