Falling in love with my acoustic motorcycle & Biking Apps!

Hello All-

Over the past two years I've been learning to bike as a form of transportation in New York City. In an attempt to better understand my stats and to encourage me to push myself I've been using the paid version of Cyclemeter. I went from hating working out, to biking for my commute, to loving biking, and clocking a good 36 miles a week.

Now I cannot imagine my life without my acoustic motorcycle. (Vroom!)

It's revolutionized my health, both physical and mental.

On To Apps:

I've been using cyclemeter for about a month now which has been great. However I'm disappointed with the "Average Speed" calculations. It can be hard to get a proper reading since my commute has many stop lights. Does anybody use an app that determines "median speed" instead?

"Acoustic motorcycle," LOL. You must be a guitarist as well as a bicyclist :)

I haven't used Cyclemeter. But I have experienced MapMyRide and Strava. I think MMR has an "auto-pause" function that will detect stops and halt the timer and the speed stats during that period. Strava might do that automatically with it counting "Moving time."

So you might want to check those out. Or maybe Cyclemeter has an auto-pause option you could activate.

Edit: So I just looked at the Cyclemeter website, and I see they do have auto start/stop and I guess you are using that. I'm not aware of an app that uses median instead of mean for average speed.

Looks like Cyclemeter does have an auto-stop feature, which would help some. However, with all the random stops/starts/slowdowns of city riding it will be difficult to calculate progress via speed.

As for apps, it's amazing how some apps really enhance the riding experience. When I got back to riding after a loooong layoff, I found Strava and used it to record my first slow plodding ride. Despite, how tired I was, and how dismal my performance looked on screen, it was cool to see what I did. I have found it a great motivator and even met some good riding because of it as well.
