Friday, Ordinary 17, Proper 12 drew us into the story of Jacob and Rachel’s first meeting when they fell for each other. He had learned in yesterday’s lesson that his Uncle Laban had flocks of sheep near there and he saw Rachel from afar off. He greeted her with excitement because he had traveled so far to reunite with his relatives and he had been on the run from Esau because of his cheating him out of the birthright of the older son.
Now he was coming to meet family and discovered his uncle had a daughter that Jacob loved. The beginning of the saga that would result in Jacob fathering twelve sons that would become the twelve tribes of Israel was about to be realized. God was at work in his life, using his wrongs and making them right. Bringing him safely to the old country.
Jacob’s heart, while as sneaky as his mother, was still in sync with God. He desired to do what pleased God. Esau had dismissed God and his heart was not in tune with God. Because of the care of Jacob and dismissive Esau, God said that he loved Jacob and hated Esau.
The New Testament lesson delved into what happened when his chosen people were dismissive like Esau had been. Luke wrote of the history of the tabernacle where the Israelites worshipped. While they were in the wilderness they used the tent, but when David became king and Solomon built the famous temple which was a proper place for God to reside. But the prophet spoke and reminded the children of Israel when they became cocky that they built God a place to live. In fact, God resided in heaven and earth was a footstool not a residence. Stephen berated the contemporary leadership, comparing them to the ancient leadership, calling them stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart, i.e. not really Jewish in reality or in spirit. Why? He answered that it was their refusal to give their hearts or listen to God.
Give their hearts or listen to God.
They were just like their ancestors, who had resisted the Holy Spirit, rejecting and/or killing the prophets because of their disbelief in the message that the righteous one would come. Worse than that, they had killed Jesus. As God’s chosen people they had turned away like Esau and killed the very one who could save them. Arrogance. Not thinking they needed anything. The One who gave them everything, was the One they rejected.
For us, we have the realization that God loved Jacob and led him to safety with his Uncle Laban and there was Esau, who turned from God like the leaders of the Jews who were instrumental in killing Jesus. We have a choice. Will we be arrogant like Esau and the leaders during Christ’ time or will we be like Jacob, flawed, sneaky and yet loving of God; willing to learn from his mistakes and be the man God intended him to be?
We can be like the greats. Loving. Faithful. True. And God will lead us like Jacob to the safety of the family of God.
Thanks be to God.

Acts 7:44-53
King James Version (KJV)
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 But Solomon built him an house.
48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we give you thanks for being there for Jacob and for us. Help us not to turn aaway in arrogance like the leaders in Christ’s time and Esau. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we might be all you want us to be. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 17, Proper 12 scrutinized the ancient stories of the children of God and compared them to the leaders of the Jews during Christ’s live. The comparisons were strong because arrogance was the common denominator. People who think they are smarter, stronger, cleverer and better than God are what irritates God more than anything.
We’ve all been around someone who was a know it all—they were better than everyone else around. Yet, when one knows that that person has made mistakes and errors and yet the person still behaves arrogantly, it becomes more irritating.
Pride and arrogance separates us from the Lord. But we can choose to follow in Jacob’s example and know our errors will be forgiven and we will be stronger for it.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
