Better late than never?
Sorry but yesterday was too much pain and pills to be able to focus.
Meditation
Thursday, Ordinary 18, Proper 13 cut to the point—God was at work bringing unity among believers. The Psalmist cried out to God for justice. Life was unfair, is unfair. Other Psalms recorded that “the rain falls on the just and the unjust.” Not everything fell into place at every moment.
The promise we had from Romans 8 the other day was that “all things work together for the good of those who were called and loved God.” So why were there so many circumstances when it didn’t seem to work out? The promise didn’t say instantly work together. The children of Israel didn’t return from Egypt to the Promised Land for four hundred years.
Did God forget those Israelites in those four hundred years? No! An absolute no. God worked in all their lives biding the time until Moses grew up. But the promise was fulfilled.
Today’s lesson spoke of fulfillment, too. The Psalmist called for help. The Psalmist was certain he would receive help. In the Old Testament lesson, the prophet Isaiah spoke to the promise of Jacob’s people receiving the land. The land of promise was quite extensive. We haven’t seen the holding of the land that was promised, only part of the land.
For thousands of years, the land had seen wars and would continue to see wars over who was in charge. Isaiah spoke of the oppressors of Israel, who captured them, would become subjects of Israel. In addition, the prophet tells of a future where non-Jews join the descendants of Jacob and become one family of God. Unity. Unification.
Paul wrote to the Philippians about the fact that he was grateful for their help. He acknowledged that they were the only ones to support him after he left Macedonia. Even among the early Christians there were disputes about who knew better. Paul was not always respected by some of the early churches. But he echoed the Psalmist and Isaiah when he remained confident of the future, knowing that if he suffered hardship or if he had plenty, he accepted where he was since he was in service to God regardless of his circumstances.
The church has a long way to go for unification. Human self-interests still get in the way of harmony. But God is at work, just as before and will continue to work until the second coming. Whether we wait 400 years or another 1000 years, the promises that God will unite Israel, and put them to rule over their enemies, and non-Jews, who are also believers will join with them and we will become one big happy family of Jacob.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Isaiah 14:1-2
King James Version (KJV)
14 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.
2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, for every time we fail to work toward harmony in the body of Christ, we ask your forgiveness. Forgive our arrogance which suggests we know better than you. Thank you for the promise of unity in the family of God. May your name be praised by all the things we do and say. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Thursday, Ordinary 18, Proper 13 shared a great thought that songwriters and prophets have held up to inspire hope—there will come a time that things will be fully under God’s control. No more would the devil undermine. Instead the enemies of the Jews would no longer be their captors but instead would be under their rule. But most importantly, all of God’s family –all believers—would be united and adopted into the family of Jacob. We will all be a part of the fulfillment of the promise—unified under the one true God.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
