Why don't we get started on the Orchardist and hope our friend L can get away from work to join us.

Waiting for my book to arrive, but have read the first few pages online in a free preview and it sounds super good!

Felt like another lightweight book...read Liane Moriarity's , The Hyponotist's :Love Story and really liked it. Guess this author is a hit with me.

Just began The Orchardist and so far, so good.

The synopsis of The Hypnotist sounds intriguing. I might look at that one. I have 5 other books waiting for me right now. I just received this month's pick, but I'm finishing up something else - A Tap on the Window by Linwood Barclay. It's a bit dark so far, but I do like a mystery.

Another author...Linwood Barclay!! I had not heard of him but some of his books sound interesting. Too many books and not enough time.

I began our August book and it is just hypnotic. I am nearly done as the writing is wonderful and it reads very quickly. I hope the ending isn't disappointing. Can't wait to hear your opinion.

I'm starting this months book tonight. Glad to hear the book is hypnotic and well written. That's a good combo.

Barclay's book was an easy read and the plot was interesting, but a bit sad. He may not write happy endings. However, according to the dust cover, one of his books was optioned for a movie, so I may read that one soon. I've also got a Kingsolver book on the bedside table. And, I don't want to make you jealous (heehee), but I read the next Spencer-Fleming book. That leaves only the most recent book unread. It's been a blockbuster summer with books!

I'll be back in California during September for my daughter's wedding. Can I bring you an alligator book cover, or a tote with a pink flamingo print on it?

Hope you are enjoying the book. Yes, it has been a good reading summer for you. What Kingsolver book is next? Jealous, oh yes, I have ordered All Mortal Flesh...need to catch up!! Maybe we can make the last one our September read.

Oh, alligator or flamingo...that is a rough choice. Another happy family event for you. You are a bicoastal Mama. Next are the little ones  Next week 2 of my grandchildren will be spending the week before school starts. I am tired thinking about it. But tomorrow my dear friend from So. Ca. is visiting and we plan a day in Napa. It has been in the mid 80 range, so I am relaxing already.

I finished the Orchardist. You are right that the book is hypnotic. I have to add that some of the writing was unintelligible. It sometimes resembled a stream of consciousness, rather than an actual thought. This left me unable to decide what the writer was trying to say. I did appreciate the slow pace set in the book - it is what I imagine living a hundred years ago might have been like.

The Kingsolver book is Prodigal Summer. We have a little time before we have to pick a September read, but I am always up for Spencer-Fleming! I would love to hear from Lenore and others.

Knock if off with the grandkid stuff - I'm much too young to be a grandmother. :noway:

I also felt the pace of the book set the stage for the taking you back in time. I found the lack of quotation marks hard to get used to at first. I guess I was in a stream of consciousness mood as I just fell into the pace of the book and became involved with the desolate life and characters. My friends thought it was too sad to enjoy. But I just like character studies and it flowed for me.

Prodigal Summer is the one Kingsolver book, I have not read. Would you like to consider making it the September reading choice?

Hope Lenore is okay. Let's send her a message :)

Just kidding...the grandchild decision is never ours. But they do exhaust and young isn't a bad thing :blushing:

Yes, let's choose the Kingsolver book for September. It will be a good airplane read. I'm also going to bring the Secret Life of Bees because it's thin, and then I'm going to watch the movie. If you hear back from Lenore, let me know. I'm sure work will settle down soon; well, I'm not sure of that, but I hope it will.

Okay for Sept... So you are off to Ca next week? We are shaking !!

I am hoping Lenore's work schedule eases up. She mentioned she was using another device and it was difficult to access more than the Home Page. I messaged the new lady but she did not respond.

Enjoy Bees. Next month my book club is reading, Traveling with Pomegranates, Kidd wrote it with daughter. I, also, like to read a book and then see the movie. Personally, can't wait for Gone Girl to come out.

Mary have a great time at the wedding. M

I heard about the quake. My daughter's friends apartment in Napa was destroyed because the plaster came off the walls. She is going to stay with my daughter, which leaves me homeless for now. But I'm going anyway. Something will work out. It makes it exciting.

    Hey Diamondettes,
I have missed the book club but I am back..
I have my computer up and running in the newly laminated room. I plan on getting the Kingsolver book. I am going to Calif in December for another visit to my father. Glad to hear the earthquake wasnt worse than it appears to be.

I also have a book by John Grisham; Sycamore Road written in 2013. Has anyone read it?

Yippee!!!! Glad you are back  . I enjoy Grisham. Have not read that Grisham book.

Saddens me to see all those lovely buildings being red tagged. Happening in the middle of the night kept the injuries down and that was a blessing. It was the worst I felt since '89.

Glad fixing your computer and decorating are completed.
