Erik is in intensive care with an extremely life threatening condition. Please think of him and send him all of your prayers and good energy his way today. He has a beautiful wife and 14 year old son, that need their dad around for many years to come.

Hello all. I am. Doing much better! Thank you. Well lets just say that was not a over use injury back in July. Although I stopped riding, The pain resided a bit but never really went away. I traveled to Denver to do some work and the first week I was here I was in bed with breathing and chest pains. I went to urgent care where they thought it was a heart issue. After the EKG and X-ray, they found nothing wrong. They told me to take ibuprofen every three hours. At this point I thought maybe I slept on it wrong on a crappy hotel bed. The pain went away at the end of the week. I did some work over the weekend. Going up and down the ladder and aggravated my calf, the same one from riding. It swolled up and was extremely painful to walk on. I again went back to urgent care where they told me I over stressed my leg. They recommend another regimen of ibuprofen. i had a couple days off until my next job, and stayed in bed both days. i again went to work the next day and when the day was over, my entire left leg was tightly swollen. the next morning i went to a doctors emergency care, and when the doctor saw my leg, he said i need to goto the hospital emergency room right away. when i got there, they admitted me right away, did ultrasounds of my leg, and cat scans of my upper body. they found my vein on my left leg almost entirely blocked. i went straight to surgery. they went in the vein and cleaned it out, and put me on some strong blood thinning meds as well as pain killers. i then went to the ICU unit for recovery. the next day, which is today, i did more cat scans. i do have some mino clots in my lungs which is why i had such problems my first week. Those will be treated with meds. the surgon told me they were going to half to go back in an look around. they would make a deturmination if a filter would need to be installed to protect the heart and brain from any clots that may break thru, what caused all this in the first place was i have some syndryum where the main artery in my pelvus crosses over the leg vein. arteries are stronger than veins, and it crushed the vein, which is what created the clots. so on the second surgery, they also put in a splent in the vein there. both doctors were amazed how clean the vein was as compared to yesterday, so no filter is needed. the doctors were in fear when i first came in, that i may loose my leg or some toes. all the prayers helped so thank you. looks like it will be a full recovery from here on. i will be on blood thinning meds for at least 6 moths. i will be meeting with more doctors tomorrow to discus my lifestyle for the next few months including my bike riding. I went into such detail, so if anyone else goes through something remotly similar to get to the doctor asap. I consider myself blessed, as the out come for this could have easily been worse, much worse. I still have a couple days here in hospital. I will be out of ICU tomorrow. again thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

    KJ

I have been saying little prayers for you all day. You aren't out of the woods yet, so you better behave yourself! I feel bad after we were messaging about your health stuff i had a lingering feeling that it was a blood clot in your lung... It is hard being a nurse, I always go to the worst case scenario and get everyone all worked up over things when they don't need to be, so I didn't say anything.

KJ, glad to hear from you and you letting us know what happened.

That sounds like a close call. Take it easy and stay on those blood thinners. Man! I'm just glad those clots didn't get stuck in some bad places.

I never knew an artery could compress a vein like that and cause obstruction and clotting like that. Crazy! Good to know. I also did not know that a filter could be put in place to protect your heart. But I'm real glad you didn't need that.

I had a co-worker that had a clot in his leg and it was also treated very seriously as with yours. But everything worked out fine for him after being on Cumadin for some months.

Let us know how you heal up and we are all continuing to wish you a speedy and full recovery.

Glad to hear they've found the problem, and your getting proper care for it...

Look after yourself, and listen to what the doctor tells you to do... no sense in pushing the recovery along - it'll take as long as it wants to take - just got to roll with it.

Wow! I would have never expected that out of you with all the exercise you do. Glad to hear you're on the med. Glad your not in medicine. Medical people make the worst patients. Take your time. Make sure you get a picture of you in the ICU and post in on your mirror. That way every time you think, "I can push it and I'll be OK", You can look in the mirror and remember what it was like. Take care of yourself and remember to take your time coming back.

Similar thing happened to me, except it was in my right arm, I was totally misdiagnosed and only until my arm swelled up like a Christmas ham was I sent to the emergency room. It was then discovered that I had a blood clots in the vein between my clavicle and deltoid muscles and in my left lung. Fortunately it was found by some really competent Doctors. I had to self-inject for 10 days with a blood thinner and then went onto Coumadin/warfarin. I have subsequently been on the meds for almost 2 years months and according to the Doc won’t be coming off anytime soon. KJ - in terms of exercise for me, I wasn't allowed to lift any weights above 90* for more than an year but was given the all clear by the specialist, when told that the clot is diminished in size however it is stable.
I have found that taking deep breaths sometimes hurts on my left side and have been told that this is due to scarring however it has not affected my adversely with running or riding. wishing you all the best and hope that you get well soon. Let me know if you would like any other info with the meds I am on.

Wow, scary stuff there. Glad to hear you're doing better and that they caught it before it got even worse (big clots in the lungs or brain). Hope the recovery goes well and you're back out on the bike soon!

Thank you everyone for your prayers and well wishes. I am not certain as to what the road ahead will be, but as Kupe shared, my recovery may be the similar in that I will be limited in what I can do. I do know that I will not be able to ride my bike outside as long as I am on blood thinning meds. The doctor said that it would be a minimum of 6 months, but most likely longer. One minor road rash or scrape would be a major issue. I should be able to ride the trainer inside however. I also have lung scarring from some clots that dislodged from my leg, and as Kupe said, It can be painful on deep breaths, but this usually only affects me at night when I am laying down. I am currently traveling back to Phoenix, and once I get there I will get set up with a doctor and get all the details that I don’t have now. If anyone gets swelling in your leg or arm that lasts more than two days, go to the doctor right away. I just didn’t know better, and the first two doctors I went to didn’t help me.

I bet the limitation is going to be hard for you, but at least you can get on the trainer at some point. Real glad you stopped riding during the TDF challenge when your leg pain started. Wise move for sure, especially in hindsight. Damn close call.

Hey, was that recurring pain you had in the foot also related to this?

I don't believe the foot issue was related myself because it goes back much further. Once I get on with a doctor, I will be sure to bring it up though, nice call Archon
