Anyone travel with bikes very often? Are there any that come in under airlines' oversized baggage sizes and that will avoid oversized baggage fees?

I have a biknd Helium travel case, it is slightly larger than a really large suite case. When flying from Canda, via Hawaii (United) back to (Hawaiin air)Australia. I paid for an additional bag. No issue with the size. Same when I have flown nationally(Qantas) and taken my bike.

It goes in as oversize baggage and there is normally and drop off point that you take it too.

Best bet is to check with the airline that you will be flying with directly as I would imagine that they all have their own rules and regulations.

Here is your challenge, if you are going to an event then the airlines get real wise to bike bags - marked or not. You have a large number of athletes with bike bags and wheel bags hitting the same airport all within a couple of days. The airlines figure it out real quick.

Currently Southwest seems to be the best. $75 each way unless you get lucky. Alaska is the same but Alaska charges for all check in bags, so the 1st bag is $25 and the bike is $75.

Delta, United and AA are the worst.

It is rare these days to get away without paying. I fly out of San Diego and the curbside boys know a bike bag from a 1000 yards !! Too many Tri boys here...:-(((

Good luck, my info is current...I fly out Monday and then again September 4. If I can talk them out of a charge I'll post it.

    ^^^ Agree with this.

$100 per flight in the US and $200 overseas, (Note, the overseas cost can be waived if the bag dimensions and weight are below a certain amount. Stories of getting away with it are few and far between.

I did read recently though that one guy completely breaks down his bike, not just wheels and bars. He then puts it in a Hockey goalie's bag. Apparently he gets away with it. Not sure how much potation there would be for the bike though?
