Hey everybody! I thought yesterday's discussion was awesome! For some reason I am unable to sign in off my home computer, it won't accept my FB login. So I am late getting this started. Anyone is welcome to start the daily thread and Pat or I can sticky it to the top.

How is your self care going? I am having do to a battery of exams like mammography, colonoscopy, physical etc to get ready for bariatric surgery. Some of them I should have already had done. How is your self care? Are you up to date with everything? Are you taking care of YOU?

I'm terrible about self care. I'm terrible about prioritizing myself. But I'm pretty decent about annual health testing. I am not having surgery unless something blows up in my face from here. I missed most of the discussions this week. I've been running around like a 1 legged man in a butt kicking contest...

However, I've had the requisite health screenings, and a few early ones. I go to the doctor regularly. But any other self care is hit and miss - with far more miss... I am a huge procrastinator, so sometimes a few things go a little late, but I usually get the major things done. I need to get back to some things...

Any suggestions with how to put the priorities in our lives where they need to be - on ourselves first and foremost? When push comes to shove, and something has to give, what gives is almost always me or something about me, because it is the one factor I know I have the most control over. Is that weird?

Hugs to all, I've missed our conversations terribly!!!

P.S. Posted this in an older thread...wanted to ask here, in case no one else goes back to read everything like I do!

Actually, on a somewhat related conversation, I'm in a position to be able to get an HRM under medical reimbursement due to my blood pressure and such, but I'm having some problems figuring out what would be the best medically justified option as far as tracking exertion and all that...do any of y'all have suggestions?

@Knitormiss - what ios HRM? - and Julie - what surgery are you having? - I am good about self careas far as doc and health screening goes - even befor emy cancer. Self care as far as weight - not so good - I have been missing in action and spent a couple of hours watching seminar for weight loss surgery SUnday and it scared me - but I am also scared t be "severley obese" with all the health issues that go with it - I just came off one cancer med that causes weight gain - so I am hopeful I will see a weight reduction now - but Im another med and it comes with its own side effects - LOL
Im trying not to get discouraged - - you all are doing so good in your weight loss -

In our house mom always comes last when it comes to taking care of myself. I try to make it a point to have an annual physical and the occasional med check when required but a lot of times they get put off and forgotten to reschedule. There is a strong history of diabetes in the women in my family so I know I should be going regularly but if the schedule is tight and something has to give my things are the first to go. I absolutely hate going to the dentist but I do go every 6 months just because my youngest won't go unless he can watch them with me first.

I try to keep in mind the airplane oxygen mask speech with putting your own mask on first and then helping others since if you pass out you can't help them but when it isn't a life and death situation my kids always come first.

KnitOrMiss- I have a polar ft60 monitor and it lets you know what heart rate zone you are in as well as the heart rate. I think the ft4 (more basic model) does as well but I can't remember. At the end of a training session it will tell you your average heart rate as well as the maximum heart rate. I like that you can actually lock in a zone when exercising and the monitor will beep at you every few seconds if you leave that zone. I think it helps me to get a more effective work out by keeping my heart rate in a set zone. Not sure if that is any help to you or not.

I am not great about self care. A part of it is I am 28 and part of it is that I just don't like going in to the doctor haha. I go to the eye doctor more often than a regular doctor and that is only once a year. I really should schedule a general physical. I will put that on my to do list.

I should probably use some of the benefits I am paying Blue Shield for and have a physical but I haven't yet, maybe when I get closer to 200lbs.

As for the HRM under reimbursement. Since theirs no direct correlation between blood pressure and heart rate I would go with the approach that your weight loss and exercise are part of addressing your blood pressure and the best way for you to monitor your exercise is with a HRM. It's a perfectly true and reasonable statement.

I am in UK with NHS so getting a physical is not something that happens unless some illness is suspected and minimal tests may be done then. I have not found doctors here to be much help. My doctor is very nice but has 5 minute slots to see patients in so not a lot of oportunity to really get to bottom of any issues. I tend to consult google instead and usually get a more helpful response.

I do not take as much care of myself as I deserve and that is something I continue to work on. Eating right is a big step in right direction though.

I have chosen lap band surgery. This is going to be short, I found out this morning right after I wrote this post that one of my close and much loved friends died on Tuesday. We had not spoken in a few months, just life, and in that few months she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, her kidneys couldn't deal with the chemo and she died very quickly. It was a dreadful shock, I have been crying all day, her daughter called me earlier to talk to me and I was completely distraught. She was a wonderful wonderful person.

I am so sorry, losing loved ones is the hardest thing to deal with. An important time to be nice and caring to yourself, while dealing with such a shock. Hugs
