Wednesday, Ordinary 20, Proper 15, the Old Testament lesson skipped over the big reveal of Joseph to his brothers, which was the lesson on Sunday, and followed up with Pharaoh and the Egyptians learning the good news and celebrating along with him. Pharaoh insisted that Joseph’s brothers return to Canaan with wagons of abundance for Jacob and inform their father of the reunion. Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, whom Jacob believed was dead, was not only alive but was the source of their salvation as the governor of all Egypt, in charge of everything.
Pharaoh wanted Joseph’s dad to come to Egypt with all his family, so they could be lavished with lands and riches. Joseph sent a caravan of wagons loaded with clothes and silver, especially showered on Benjamin.
Joseph sent them on their way with a command for them not to fight along the way home. I suspect that their discussion might have included the blame game and a few ‘if only’s. The guilt had already hit them, but they were instructed by Joseph to focus on getting the news to his father…not on each other’s lacks or sins.
The brothers returned to Jacob with the words that Joseph was alive, but Jacob felt faint with the news and didn’t believe them at first. But then he saw the wagon loads of luxury rolling up to the house and the reality struck him. His favorite son was alive. His spirits lifted and he began to believe he would see his son again.
Once again, an ‘outsider’ –Pharaoh—became an integral part of the Kingdom of God. Pharaoh recognized Joseph’s true God. He also rejoiced at the reunion of the brothers and insisted that Joseph’s father come to Goshen to live. A non-Jew demonstrated faith in God and wanted the well-being of the children of Israel.
The New Testament lesson carried the theme of Jews and non-Jews inclusion further. As Jesus wandered the countryside, many Jews followed him and sought him out as a healer. They brought the sick in droves to him. This lesson included him healing a man of leprosy (a disease that ostracized the person from the community). His body, covered with scaly lesions and rotting flesh, became pure and clean.
Later, another non-Jew, came to Jesus and asked to heal his sick servant, who was too sick to bring to Jesus. His humility was profound. When Jesus planned to go to the servant, the man said he was unworthy to have Jesus come to his house and Jesus need only to speak the word, and the servant could be healed. Jesus hadn’t seen such faith among the Jews and he healed the servant that moment.
Once again, the theme of bringing Jew and non-Jew together in praise of God was woven into the Old and New Testament stories.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Genesis 45:16-28
King James Version (KJV)
16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.
17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;
18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.
19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.
20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is your's.
21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.
22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.
23 And to his father he sent after this manner; ten *kitten* laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she *kitten* laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way.
24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.
25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father,
26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.
27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:
28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, the stories of Joseph and his brothers, the captain with a sick servant and a man healed of leprosy inspire us to believe that amazing things can happen in our lives, too. Empower us to believe and have faith like the soldier did, so that we might share the good news with others. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Wednesday, Ordinary 20, Proper 15 shared one celebration after another. Pharaoh and the palace celebrated the good news of Joseph’s reunion with his family. The children of Israel would be united with the Egyptians for a time—Jew and non-Jew alike. The New Testament involved two healings—one a Jew and the other a non-Jew. Jesus reached out to all. He included those some Jews would reject and praised the captain for his great faith. Two outsiders (Pharaoh and the captain) featured prominently in the stories, for they ‘got it.’ They understood and acknowledged the greatness of God and his Kingdom.
Believers can be inclusive, too. Instead of seeking ways to divide us, we can seek ways to bring people together. We can have the faith of the captain and demonstrate our belief that God can do miracles in our lives. There are fewer points that divide us and more aspects of Christianity that unite us. Let’s celebrate our unity in Christ.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
