Juice Fast- any benefits?

Has anyone ever done a juice fast/cleanse? Or just tried juicing to replace one meal? I got a juicer from a rummage sale last weekend and I have read both good and bad things about juice fasts. I know that people lose weight on them but it's mostly water, etc but are there any real health benefits?

I think the general census is that, unless you are going to sustain the juice cleanse for the rest of your life, it's not a good idea. As this is supposed to be a 'life style' change it's better to find something that works for you and is sustainable.
My thoughts? I think if you want to replace a meal here and there with a fresh juice; go for it. I personally like to have juice some mornings rather than solid food. Just be mindful that, fruit is going to give you a huge dose of sugar. So will some vegetables, like carrots and beets. With that being said, my favorite juice is apple, beet, celery, and carrot. It's sweet and so so good! I also really like cabbage juice. It makes my kitchen smell like farts, but it calms down my stomach when it's hurting.
Overall, give it a try if you want. But sticking to a juice cleanse is very hard. You will get insanely hungry. I tried it years ago, and only made it 2 days. It's tough.0 -
Hi, I'm sure everyone reacts a bit different to a juice cleanse. ( I am not sure about a fast) I usually do a juice cleanse before I have blood work done. There are so many options when you mix veggies and fruit, and they are all good. My daughter drinks a smoothie every morning. She starts with raw spinach and adds whatever vegetable and fruit she can find. She eats regular food the rest of the day.
My favorite is the rind of watermelon (without the skin) I keep it cut up in a ziplock in the freezer. Throw it in the blender with some water, and Its a nice substitute for ice cream.
Don't go hungry. Listen to your body. Good Luck0 -
I bought a wonderful juicer when I began this lifestyle change but when the doctor told me I was pre diabetic and I saw how much natural sugar was in fruits and many veggies I returned the juicer. I would love to someday juice but for now its not an option.0

Thanks for all the thoughts on it. I have watched the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" which really pushes the whole juice fast/cleanse thing, but that guy did it for 60 days. What I've read says that yes you will get nutrition from the fruits and veggies, but it's also high in sugar since the fruit is high sugar plus you don't get the fiber because it removes the pulp so it won't be very filling. A blender will give you a smoothie so you will be drinking the whole fruit. The independent webMD type sites also said that as for the "cleanse" benefits that it's not necessary- your body already does a great job of this by using your liver, etc. You also need to drink the juice within a day because it will start to go bad after that. So I may make some breakfast type juice (and maybe give some to my husband) and try it for breakfast because I am not hungry in the mornings anyway.0

My opinion: "Juicing as meal replacement is a bad idea. I do believe, however your body can truly benefit from the nutrient rich juice recipes as a supplement to a healthy diet"...
I am sure a nutritionist or physical fitness trainer will correct or add to my statements...
My opinion/understanding of juicing: "It is very easy to lose weight (if you can call it that) by juicing, however when you begin to eat real food again, your body will immediately begin to store it". I want to say that the individual who juices is actually losing more lean mass than body fat.
Great find!!!0
