Sorry for this late post. I had no opportunity at the hospital and by the time I got home, I was 'brainless' and unworthy to write anything.
I'll post today's lesson later.
Meditation
Friday, Ordinary 21, Proper 16 shared the story of Jacob’s last request of Joseph and his brothers to be buried in the cave with his parents, grandparents and wives.
Joseph was the governor of Egypt, but he followed the wishes of his father. First he went through the Egyptian procedures of embalming for forty days; following by outward displays of mourning for seventy days and last, he prepared a caravan to return to Canaan with his brothers and families.
Joseph and his brothers honored their father in Canaan. Many observed the extensive respect paid to Jacob by what they perceived were ‘Egyptians’ and consequently the place was called Abel Mizraim which meant “Egyptian time of sadness.” Then, the brothers returned to Egypt—all the families to the land of Goshen, where they settled.
While Joseph demonstrated the humility of a son, who honored his father, the New Testament lesson indicted the overweening pride of those who lay claim to the accomplishments of doing ministry.
Bottom line: don’t boast. Or, if you boast, boast about the Lord’s work, not your own. I’ve said it before, but it is worth repeating. My mother used to quote her mother, “You work like it all depends on you. You pray because it all depends on God.”
Paul quoted Jeremiah 9:24 New Century Version (NCV)
24 But if people want to brag, let them brag
that they understand and know me.
Let them brag that I am the Lord,
and that I am kind and fair,
and that I do things that are right on earth.
This kind of bragging pleases me,” says the Lord.
I’ve been guilty of taking credit for the things that God has done and caught myself saying things in ways that don’t give God the glory. And I have struggled with boasting about God, because it can sound contrived and rote, rather than authentic and honorable. But that is not a bad thing. We should always struggle with how we present God. Too much arrogance in the church has been a terrible thing. Arrogance has done more harm than good. Most church splits have been about people being arrogant and unwilling to agree to disagree or get along despite differences of opinions.
When we are arrogant about our work for God, we are negating acknowledging the power of God at work in us. The Creator of the Universe (or multiverse for some scientists) who was willing to work in my personal life…and I don’t give credit where credit is due…--when I think about it I am ashamed. God is so much greater than we can even imagine and still, God forgives me every day when I confess my sins. That kind of love and forgiveness is wonderful and amazing beyond belief.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Genesis 49:29-50:14
King James Version (KJV)
29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.
31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.
32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth.
33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
50 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.
2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.
4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.
6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.
7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.
10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.
11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.
12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:
13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.
14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, forgive our arrogance and help us to walk in the truth of the Word of God that we would present you in a good way to the people we interact with. We want to be like Joseph who honored you and his father, Jacob, taking his remains back to Canaan for burial with his father. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 21, Proper 16 gives us pause as we think about how we conduct our lives. We can be like Joseph, who honored his father and God—demonstrating to all of Egypt and the witnesses in Canaan how one respects God and parents. The name of the place became known as the place of Egyptian sadness, because Joseph would have appeared to be an Egyptian even those his roots were of Canaan.
Paul pleaded with the Corinthian church to put away the arrogance. It was a church that had come from pagan gods and had received many ‘gifts’ of the Holy Spirit to compensate for their lack of education about God. But they began to boast that they were better because of receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They took credit, as if they were better than others. They received more gifts for the opposite reason—they we desperately in need of help from God for them to be able to function.
We must be cautious with how we present the work of God that we do. People don’t respect that which is inauthentic or conceited. We must strive to be authentic, humble and gracious.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
