Some Good News

I had emailed my gastroenterologist. Just saying that I have a gastroenterologist makes me feel old. Anyway, I emailed to ask if the high protein diet after VSG would cause problems with my diverticulitis flares, or rather, would it make me flare more.

He wrote back to say that he sees no problem with the high protein diet.

I was stunned. So, I start my five month pre-insurance diet weigh-in on Thursday and have my preliminary appointment set up with the surgeon in Mid-October.

I will be asking my doc for a sleep study and with that, if diagnosed with apnea, I will be then allowed to diet below that 41 bmi. Right now I am at 42.7.

I'd like to really give it all I can, rather than go half-measures. But I still know that my propensity to go full bore often makes me burn out.

I found that the best thing about the pre-surgery diet for me was that I did *not* have to go all out to lose weight. Having a calorie goal (rather than the old way of just ea a lot less) coupled with a high protein target led me to eat 'reasonably' rather than an all out diet. It generally follows the MFP philosophy of eat a reasonable amount of calories that is a deficit to your calories burned and good things will happen.

I am surprised that you can lose your way out of the surgery. They specifically told us in my program that once they set our starting weight, any loss was good loss. You should double check that with your program. I think my program wants people to lose about 10% of body weight during the pre-surgery process, and that would be more than your 1.7 BMI points.

Good luck! And great news on the OK for the high protein diet.

That's great news! BTW I lost nothing on the 6 month "Dr assisted diet attempt". I was starting with a BMI of 37, (my insurance pays with a BMI above 35 if you have documented health problems and I had multiple uncontrolled even with meds). If I had lost weight I'd have not qualified so I didn't apply myself until my consult when they submitted my paperwork. From that point, it was "on" and I haven't looked back!

That's great news! Like I told you before, I have not had a problem with my diverticulitis since being sleeved. My IBS went away completely and my doctor said it was because I'm no longer overfilling my digestive tract. Probably why I also have no issues with my diverticulitis. In the beginning you might want to have a laxitive on hand, I needed one on and off the first year. After that, you will be eating enough roughage and fiber that it's not hard to stay regular.

    Really happy for you!
