Meditation
Wednesday, Ordinary 22, Proper 17 skipped the visit of Moses to Pharaoh where his staff became a snake and went to the next occasion when he visited the palace with a request to let the Israelites go so they could worship God in the wilderness.
But Pharaoh’s heart wasn’t interested in losing his slaves, who were so capable and hard-working (despite him calling them lazy). So God had Moses and Aaron up the ante. Aaron took his rod and strike the water when Pharaoh was out for his morning walk along the Nile.
The Nile River turned to blood and the fish died. The stench overwhelmed the Egyptians and they gagged trying to drink water…so they didn’t. It stayed that way for seven days and Pharaoh didn’t change his behaviors. He couldn’t acknowledge who was in charge of the world. He refused to recognize the true God.
The New Testament lesson had some believing Jesus, when he healed a deaf, blind and dumb man who had demon in him. Leaders in the Jewish community said that Jesus was casting out demons because he used the power of Satan.
Jesus’ response was the well-known, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Pharaoh missed out on learning about the true God and he paid dearly for it—the River Nile turning to blood, because he wouldn’t let the Hebrew people go. The New Testament Jewish leaders, fearing the growing appeal of Jesus, tried to be dismissive by telling others that Jesus was using Satan to cast out demons. It didn’t make sense, but they said it anyway.
Jesus went on to explain that much could be forgiven people but the ‘blasphemy of the Holy Spirit’ was unforgivable. What exactly did that mean? What had the leaders just done? They had declared something that Jess did with the power of the Spirit to be of the devil. To ascribe to the devil what God is doing (or what the spirit is doing) flew in the face of truth.
God is good. It would be false to say the work God does is of Satan. We would be lying. God cannot do bad things. To assign the value of God to the work of the devil is the opposite of truth. We must be cautious that we don’t teach people to falsely accuse God and blame him for things. Giving credit to God for what God does is a powerful tool—one that we can tap into if we follow Christ. May we always seek ways to show the beauty of God in our daily lives.

Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Exodus 7:14-25
King James Version (KJV)
14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh's heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.
15 Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river's brink against he come; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.
16 And thou shalt say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness: and, behold, hitherto thou wouldest not hear.
17 Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.
18 And the fish that is in the river shall die, and the river shall stink; and the Egyptians shall lothe to drink of the water of the river.
19 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.
20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.
21 And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.
22 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said.
23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.
24 And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.
25 And seven days were fulfilled, after that the LORD had smitten the river.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, sometimes things get scary. Jesus explained that a divided house cannot stand. Help us to show truth in what we say and do. Keep us from any blasphemy of the Spirit. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Wednesday, Ordinary 22, Proper 17 watched the plague of Moses and Aaron to hold out their rod over the Nile River and having it turn to blood. The life giving water that made the soil around the flood rich Nile filled with nutrients changed into blood.
We must seek to honor God with our words and actions. We don’t want to be like the leaders, who ascribed the good work that Jesus did, to the work of the devil. We don’t want to blaspheme the Holy Spirit—to credit God with that which is actually the work of Satan.
Believers should be able to make that clear distinction and not be confused at all. If we pray for the wisdom to recognize the work of God, God will make it clear for us.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
