Saturday, Ordinary 23, Proper 18 returned to indictment of those, who should know, and yet refused to believe. Pharaoh, in the Old Testament lesson, had been given nine plagues to show that God was in charge of Egypt and the world, for that matter. The fact that Pharaoh could not accept someone as higher than himself, went to the depth of his refusal to see the obvious. Yet Pharaoh treated Moses and Aaron like they were intelligent men, who were conspiracy theorists.
The movie, Conspiracy Theory, starring Mel Gibson, as a conspiracy ‘fool,’ who saw danger all around him as well as a woman he stalked, revealed the mind of a zealous theorist intent on converting all around him. People dismissed him as crazy. The twist

The movie, Conspiracy Theory, starring Mel Gibson, as a conspiracy ‘fool,’ who saw danger all around him as well as a woman he stalked, revealed the mind of a zealous theorist intent on converting all around him. People dismissed him as crazy. The twist
was the truth of the actual conspiracy. Theories may be closer to the truth than most believe.
Pharaoh certainly respected Moses—much of Egypt did, the scripture says—but they dismissed his warnings and the plagues as insignificant.
The Psalmist recognized there would be those, who believed and those, who wouldn’t; the consequences being quite different to the two positions.
The New Testament Lesson in Matthew dealt with Jesus’ scathing indictment of the teachers and religious leaders—once again, Jesus doesn’t accuse the heathen, the thieves, adulterers and/or people who choose to love someone others don’t believe is proper. No. It was the leaders of the faith—like ministers, professors of theology, elders and people in position of power within the church. Those were his target audience. What did he call them; say about them?
Hypocrites! Snakes! Children of Snakes. Terrible. “The punishment for the murder of all innocent people will fall on you….”
Their show is great, but their words were false. Their claims looked good, but their hearts were foul and God knew who they were. They would not miss out on their judgment.
Every one of us in leadership must examine ourselves that we do not fall into that self-aggrandizing attitude that fails to listen and obey the teachings of God. Was there a checklist to compare to? Yes and No. Yes, in that we have the fruits of the spirit—these are a checklist of behaviors we should exemplify. No. It is not specific and God deals with individuals in unique ways, so a ‘check list’ would not suffice. But God would change our hearts if we are open to God’s leading.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

11 And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.
2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver and jewels of gold.
3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.
4 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:
5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.
8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.
10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, Moses led his people in an extraordinary sequence. Empower us to follow in his footsteps and be open to God’s leading and obedient to the faith. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 23, Proper 18 let everyone know that just being a Jew didn’t cut it. Yes they were the chosen people; God favored them above all others, but they were also required to believe for themselves. Each Jewish leader would have to be responsible for himself. All ministers and leaders today must be accountable for themselves. We can’t do wrong and expect it to be covered up. We need to be faithful to God and be obedient to all that God wants from us—to be loving. To be kind. To be obedient. To trust God. To be merciful, like Christ.
God offers the access to the Kingdom of God to everyone, but we must know that if we don’t practice the kind of life that pleases God, we will suffer the same consequences as the leaders Christ referred to in his indictment of Jewish leaders.
Instead we can exemplify the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit and see how God works in our lives.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
