Weakness Issues?

I had my VSG on 7/7/14 and am doing really well. However, when I do strenuous work (yard work) I get really light-headed, weak and dizzy after awhile. Pre-surgery I could maintain strenuous work for several hours but now I am pooped after about an hour an a half. Anyone else have these issues?

So you are not quite 2 months post op? Could be that you are reacting to a severly reduced amount of calories compared to what you used to consume. It's like it used to be before surgery, getting lightheaded if you go without eating for 24 hours or more and then do something strenous. It could also be dehydration. Again, you can't drink as much at one time as you could before. Make sure to get all your water in and keep water with you while working. And make sure to get all your protein in as well. It will get better as you lose weight and your body adjusts to the new calorie levels.

  • I had these kinds of issues after the surgery. Pat is right on with what she suggested. Also, I was told to liberalise my salt. I found that I would experience real dizzines issues because my sodium was reduced, and especially if I was exerting myself and sweating. I found that I had to be sure I was drinking a zero calorie gatorade type beverage and that helped almost immediately. Lack of processed foods has greatly reduced your sodium and it may be you need to make sure you are very well hydrated and are replacing all the "stuff" you are losing while exerting yourself.

Thanks Pat and Susan. Great advice. I will watch my water/beverage intake. I have some Power aide Zeros in my fridge. I will take them with me next time.

I had my surgery on 7/9/14 and I still am very weak also when doing almost any strenuous work. I also know that I am not getting as much water in as I should but I am definitely working on it.

Agree with what others have said here. I had high BP as a co-morbidity before surgery. Right after surgery I was experiencing dizziness that was related to reduced fluid intake. Turns out my BP was low, without medication. These days I still run a bit low. When I feel light headed, I know I need to boost my water intake and add something with some electrolytes, (G2). I'm also more liberal with my salt intake these days.

For 6 months I would try to pass out when bending over to do planting and gardening. I felt soooo silly. My bp was in the 90's I started eating more salt and drinking more. Finally I stabilized. Though I still am careful if I am bent over for too long. Nearly fell down the stairs last night after picking up several bags I was moving. I lose my balance very easy these days. I also step on peoples feet, before I had a barrier of fat that blocked me from getting too close now I am having to adjust to a different personal space.
