I'm having my surgery in 4 days and still haven't decided on a brand of protein to use. My surgeon gave me a list of powder form and pre-mixed "to consider." What are some good choices that taste good with low sugar and carbs and higher protein?! Tell me your favorites. I will be doing 2 shakes a day and only getting 21grams of protein from my meals so I will need to get at least 54 grams of protein from the 2 shakes a day as well.

I'm supposed to have between 75-90 grams of protein daily.

I am a chocolate fiend so my favorite was Muscletech Deluxe Chocolate. As far as pre-mixed I like Pure Protein but only used them for convenience since they cost so much more.

I use Syntrax Nectar. My doctor has a non-surgical weight loss program and our pre-op diets are that food and protein bars/shakes. Post of, while on liquids, I used that exclusively, the flavored ones and the unflavored one. I am 3 years out, so I use the shakes less than at the beginning, but I still keep some on hand. There is a huge variety of flavors too, my favorite being the Cappiccino. But I would not receommend you stock up simply because most of us found our tastes were different after surgery and stuff we loved prior to, we didn't want after. Also, because I am more of a savory person, after surgery I couldn't get down the protein shakes, too sweet and thick. Once home from the hospital, I lived on Isopure Zero (protein water) and protein infused chicken and beef broth (that's where the unflavored stuff comes in).

I loved this post-surgery because it's flavored protein water, it counts as both protein and water. It's so hard to get both your protein and water in at first, this stuff just made it easier. Yes it's sweet, but not at all thick, so even I could handle it in the beginning.

I'm also a big fan of the Syntrax Nectars. There are a ton of flavors and you can order samples from Nashua Nutrition online.

I admit that some of their flavors I thought were TERRIBLE! But the ones I liked are really good. My two favorites are the Fuzzy Navel and the Chocolate Truffle.

I also used to drink Premier Protein from Costco. It was nice that they were pre-made, but the flavor wasn't great.

TIP: Don't go overboard when ordering protein supplements. It is very common that ones tastes will change post-op and it is also easy to get bored or even sick to the stomach after using one for a while. In my case, I quit Premier Protein after a few months as I just couldn't stomach it anymore.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!

I'm really loving the premier protein shakes you can get at Costco. 1 gram of sugar and like 30 grams of protein. You can get vanilla or chocolate.

Thanks for the advice! I just ordered a 12 pack of the black tea with lemon isopure and 1 lb of the whey isopure dutch low carb choclate. I'm going to try them out and see how I like them then decide what other flavors to try :)
  • My doctor approved me using Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 from GNC. I only used a scoop and a half with a cup and a half of Reduced Sugar Almond Milk. Was about 210 calories but I got 31 protein, 4 fat, 10 sugar, 313 sodium and 14 carbs from each. Worked really well for me.

I used it for the two week pre-op diet. Had one for breakfast, one for lunch, then 4 oz protein (Chicken, Beef, Fish) a a half a cup of green vegetables (green beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, asparagus, etc) for dinner.

Post surgery, I've been drinking one for breakfast because I've found it hard to get in all my protein this first week and I'm scared to death of losing my hair, lol.
