Tuesday, Ordinary 23, Proper 18 recalled the beginning exodus of the Children of Israel at the direction of Pharaoh. The Hebrews were law abiding. That terrible night, when Pharaoh’s refusals (nine times) to let the people of Israel go culminated in the death of the first-borns of all Egyptians from Pharaoh to the animals of the people, except those of the Jews, who posted the blood of the lamb on the lintel posts.
The cry went up with sorrow in every house where the first born died.
Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, directing them to leave. Immediately. And they followed the laws of the land, obeying the Pharaoh.
Women grabbed their bread dough in bowls that hadn’t had a chance to have yeast added; hence they baked unleavened bread. The Passover meal continued to use unleavened bread to honor the day they began their Exodus to the Promised Land.
The Hebrews asked the Egyptians for clothes and precious goods, which they gave gladly to hurry their departure. Over 600.000 men plus women and children, livestock and goods left, 430 years to the day after they had come to Egypt, traveling from Ramses to Succoth.
They did not leave on their own. They didn’t escape. They waited until Pharaoh directed them to leave. “Get out. Now.”
The Egyptian people, in fear and in sorrow, pleaded with them, “Go, lest we all die.”
The New Testament lesson in Romans, addressed the need to follow the laws. The goal was to respect those deserving of respect and honoring those worthy of honor. Paul instructed them to participate in the government in legitimate ways, respecting those in authority over them. Jesus was not setting up a revolution to put Christ on the throne, yet. In the meantime, the believer was called upon to be respectful of the government.
Once again, the directive from God was to be respectful and honorable. The laws of God were consistent and began with the heart. Love God. Love others. If one accomplished that then the outcome would be respectfulness towards others and giving honor to those whom honor is due.
Thanks be to God.

Exodus 12:29-42
King James Version (KJV)
29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.
32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.
33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.
34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.
35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:
36 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.
37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.
41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, help us to be law abiding, willing to trust in your work on our behalf to accomplish what must be done. Thank you for the great story of the Exodus demonstrating your power at work in their lives. Empower us to be all you want us to be. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Tuesday, Ordinary 23, Proper 18 demonstrated the profound influence that God had upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians. They flipped from being hard-hearted to a ‘please go’ attitude along with “Here is my gold and silver. Will it help get you out of town sooner?”
But it was striking that Moses just didn’t sneak everyone out of town, but waited until Pharaoh commanded them to go. Living by the authority of the Pharaoh—the powers that were—Moses didn’t leave until Pharaoh was on board with them mass departure.
God’s timing. Things did not go as smoothly or as quickly as they had hoped, but in God’s plan the timing worked to the Hebrew’s advantage. Their departure was encouraged and the Egyptians were generous with their belongings.
The New Testament lesson in Romans declared that believers must honor their government, because God put governments in place to be a part of the overall plan. People, who claim to be Christian, and yet speak with hostility and hatred against a President, are not following the laws directed by God.
“So anyone who is against the government is really against something God has commanded.”
God can work in the heart of any ruling power. Our responsibility is to be respectful and honor those in authority over us, even if we disagree. We are to bring honor and glory to God by our obedience to God’s law. Paul said it was the right thing to do. As the political world heats up, believers must show respect and honor to those in authority since that is what God has commanded.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
