Friday, Ordinary 24, Proper 19 mapped out the route of the Hebrews from Egypt to the Red Sea. The step by step lesson, which showed the overview from God’s perspective and the change of heart from Pharaoh’s view and the fearful shift of the Children of Israel, when they saw the fierce warriors of the army of Egypt chasing them in chariots with their horses pounding the dust up.
The New Testament lesson in Acts retold a snapshot of the story of Joseph going to Egypt in and the traumas he suffered that set him in place to be Pharaoh’s right hand. His position gave him an opportunity to provide food for his family in Canaan. The final request of Joseph was to be able to have his remains returned to the cave of the patriarchs to be interred with his parents.
The Psalm was a song about the Exodus of the Hebrews people as they crossed the desert and made their way to the Red Sea and Mt. Sinai.
All the lessons were on the power of God at work in the lives of the chosen people: every step of the way from the point of Joseph being sold into slavery to the reluctant Moses, who struggled with the people’s complaints to him when the Egyptian warriors chased them to the water’s edge. Moses turned to God with his own complaints and yet, God was big enough to allow Moses free rein to express his views without being punished.
For us today: God is at work. Every part of our life works together like pieces of a puzzle to bring out the final outcome that would be exactly the best for us. Joseph must have felt lonely and wondered why things were so bad, but then all turned around for the good of all nations. What if Joseph hadn’t been sold? What if Potiphar’s wife hadn’t accused him falsely, causing him to be imprisoned? What if he had not be in prison when the steward had his dream? What if he had been freed and returned to Canaan before Pharaoh had had his dream? All the disasters worked together to save a people.
What if Moses had been killed instead of allowed to grow up in Pharaoh’s household? What if his mother hadn’t been his nurse and taught him about being a good Hebrew child? What if Moses hadn’t killed the guard and fled to the desert, where he met Jethro, the priest of Midian? What if he hadn’t been prepared for all those years as a shepherd, even though he was eighty years old?
We can ask “Why me?” when things go awry in our lives, but we could use the faith experience from the stories of Scripture, like Joseph and Moses, who suffered greatly before their lives turned around into something really great.
We have the opportunity to show our own faith when we trust God, regardless of our circumstances. The externals don’t matter. What matters is that God is in control of our lives and we can trust him or deny him. Let us open our hearts to the Spirit working within us.
Thanks be to God.

Exodus 14:1-18
King James Version (KJV)
14 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.
3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.
4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.
5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:
7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.
9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.
10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.
11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?
12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:
16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 24, Proper 19 shared the ups and downs of the journey of the Children of Israel from the time of Joseph to the time of the New Testament Acts of the Apostles. The overview of the hand of God at work in the lives of his chosen people—be they Hebrews/Jews or other believers. There was great detail in the telling of the stories because the details showed how much God cared about the specifics within our lives. We can trust that the Lord will accomplish his purpose in our lives, if we open our heart to the leading of the spirit and allow the message of the Word to become internalized in our daily devotions.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
