Sunday, Ordinary 24, Proper 19 reminded all that the Lord prevailed against all foes that would not trust in the eternal God. God had said to Moses that the Egyptians refused to recognize his authority and sovereignty over all and in their pride and arrogance, they pursued the Israelites as they rested and camped at the crossing of the Red Sea.
The amazing intervention of the Angel of God in the cloud of fire lighting the camp of the while offering darkness to the Egyptians, so that the two camps were completely separated protected the Jews and confounded the Egyptians. The next day, the Egyptians saw Moses raise his hand and saw the sea part. They might have questioned whether it would work or not, but after seeing the entire multitude safely across on dry ground, they thought they would give it a go. Unfortunately, their chariot wheels sank into the sand and became mired in the ground. They called for their counterparts to turn back, but the waters rose up over them and they were caught much like a tsunami bringing the flood waters in a rush, so that there was no escape. The Egyptians learned a lesson that humbled their arrogance.
“Don’t ever think you can outwit God.”
The theme of arrogance being something that God despised was replicated in the New Testament lesson of Romans and in the Gospel lesson of Matthew. Paul wrote to the church at Rome and insisted that they not get into arrogant arguments about who knew better.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Exodus 14:19-31
King James Version (KJV)
19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:
20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Conclusion
Sunday,, Ordinary 24, Proper 19 shone the light of God on the arrogance of humanity. We discover that the earth revolves around the sun and pat ourselves on the back, while we dismiss the Creator that set in motion the great universe of billions of stars and planets…and yet who still knows the number of hairs (which seems to be changing daily) on a person’s head—as if he were irrelevant.
The Egyptians failed to recognize God the Creator, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and Moses. In their arrogance they suffered the plagues and the horrible loss of their first-borns. But their loss of a free labor force overrode their thinking and they allowed their arrogance to cause them to believe they could outdo the Israelites…or more to the point, outdo the God of the Israelites.
That is the nutshell point. People, the devil and all sorts can overcome humans, but the God of the Universe cannot be overcome. He can manipulate weather, forces of nature and time/space to accomplish his will.
Our part is to remain humble and do our part. Instead of getting into fruitless arguments with people that may not be well versed in Scriptures Paul directs us to live for God, not ourselves. Why should we judge each other? There is no good reason. We are commanded to NOT judge other Christians. Instead, let God work in the hearts of people to accomplish his goals.
In the Gospel lesson, Jesus indicts the servant that received grace for a great amount and then was hard on the debtor, who owed a pittance. This lesson is something ALL churches must learn, but we fail repeatedly. Until we get this right, our churches will remain fractured and not able to come together. God is one God over all others—it is humans that split the churches. Our arrogance keeps us apart. Our humility will bring us together in the unity of the Lord.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
