Technology for the challange

As a kickoff to the discussions, I thought I would share the technology that I am using for this challenge. Most of the technology are sites and apps for my Android phone, but for those of you with an iPhone, I think the same apps are also available on that platform.

myFitnessPal - I use this to log my food and keep track of my progress. Food logging is easy, I can use the camera on the phone to scan the bar codes on packages that I use to cook with for my meals, this means no searching through lists of different items to find something similar to what you are cooking with. This site also integrates with several other sites I use allowing my activities to be automatically synced and tracked in one place.

RunKeeper - As part of this challenge I plan on running 20 miles a week on average. To keep track of the miles, calories burned, elevation gain, etc. I use RunKeeper. This app uses your phone's GPS to track your runs, and once you are done, the activity will be synced to MyFitnessPal automatically. RunKeeper can also be used to track Cycling, Swimming, and other fitness activities. Along with the tracking, there are free training programs that you can subscribe to in the app. Using one of these training programs I went from 0 miles to 30 miles a week and a 1:45 half marathon in about 16 weeks, very cool and motivating.

Withings - I have a Health Mate WiFi scale, when I weigh, it automatically updates my weight and BMI on MyFitnessPal. It may seem OCD to some, but by having a daily weigh in and food log in one place, I can clearly see how yesterdays eating impacted my results on the scale. One example of this is a Sushi dinner, after eating Sushi, I will almost always see a 2 or 3 pound weight gain the next day. If I did not log weight and food, I would have never guessed that what felt like a light dinner would impact my weight so much.

All of these applicators are free and most of the training plans on RunKeeper are as well, so if you are already carrying the phone, you might as well use it to track those workouts. If you don't like carrying you phone while you walk or run, try something like this runners belt by Nathan. I have been using one for about 6 months now, and I really like it.

What apps are you using to track you progress and how do you like them?

Keep up the good work,

  • I also use map MapMyFitness that feeds into myfitnesspal. Kind of an easy way to track mileage via GPS. Thanks for setting this up Frank!
