Deadlifts

Will you tell me why deadlifts are awesome? I just do not like them.

Yesterday I did SL with squats (130 lb), OHP (finally got 75 lb!) and deadlift (165 lb).

I love squats. I know I have great form. OHP makes me feel like a bada** when I get them all! But deadlifts.. ugh deadlifts.

I have never been a fan - I don't really feel anything when I am doing them and I have realized that the day after doing deadlifts, I just feel exhausted. They do not cause me any pain (other than callouses and grip pain), but I just do not get why people love them so much.

So please enlighten me and give me any tips!

Everyone is different. I LOVE Deadlifts and absolutely hate squats.

You mentioned that you feel exhausted after you do them. They are one of if not the most taxing lift you will do. You're using A LOT of body mass to get that weight moving. This is one of many reasons why Deadlifting is so great.

    I also love them because...

-It's the lift I can pull the most weight with.
-It's a lift that I can do alone (which is how I lift), can go heavy on, and not have to have a spotter.

we share the bad-assery aspect of ohp, anyway  i feel tempted sometimes after i get that thing over my head to sort of strut around the floor for a while showing off my neanderthalness. neanderthalicism. neanderthalilality. oh, you know what i mean.

i guess after the firestorm of technical-things-to-keep-track-of that the other lifts can get to be, deadlifts are just so simple and kind. like finally something where my brain goes 'ah! THIS i know how to do!' bend down, grab bar, set back, stand up. squats never ever feel like that, i don't care how many people talk at me about little kids. i never saw a small child squatting down with another small child on its back. squats . . . i d'know. they just worry me. chest up, bum out, back flat, push feet, bar position, shove feet, weight here, weight there, bar path, buttwink . . . and there's an up AND a down aspect to them.

also, there's something about the whole thing of digging my heels in for a deadlift that appeals to me. i guess i like it because it's so posterior-chain, where with squats all i seem to be doing is fighting to keep some of the load off my quads. and i'm intrigued by the cns overload aspect of it. deadlifts never make me sore either, yet they can have me yawning myself to death during the cool-down stretching, and ready to eat most things that move by the time i get home.

I like deadlifting because it helps me with my booty and hamstrings more than squats do lol. It's ok not to enjoy them. I'm not a huge fan of OHP, since it's my weakest lift
  • Everyone has their preferences. Deadlifts are my favorite because I can lift the most with them and I'm good at them. It's a good confidence boost. OHP is the opposite of that for me. Good thing they're done on the same day!

I love the total body tired that comes from deadlifts, that is my favourite part about them.

Squats are my favorite. I looooooooooove squats. Even when they're really difficult and I struggle coming back up, I still love 'em.

I love me some deadlifts!! Its my heaviest lift and I love how much they work my body to get them. The day I pulled 1x5 @ bodyweight I fist pumped the air and woohoo-d myself!

    Deadlifts make me feel badass

OHP can go *kitten* itself hahaha

Deadlifts FTW! They're easy for me (unlike ohp's) and the day I pulled 2 big plates - on each end!!- was fantastic. That was about 1.5x BW. Made me feel pretty darn strong :)

Aside from the fact that it's the lift I'm the strongest at (in terms of weight lifted, anyway), it's a great full body move, and is also possibly the most functional lift you can do! Picking up things off the ground is something we do all the time! Learning how to do it with proper form is a great way to prevent injuries from moving furniture around or lifting that box of old stuff up. It's a lift you can show off outside the gym, too! lol

And I have to agree with CHFay. I've never actually used 2 double 45s, but I've loaded the plate equivalents on the bar and lifted it. It's a pretty awesome feeling. These days I feel it a lot more in my butt than I do in my back. More of a push than a pull, in a way. Maybe if you shift your perspective on it the muscles will fire more.. efficiently? I guess? Or maybe you should try sumos?

All lifts are fun! I wouldn,t be doing it the way I am if they weren't! Heck, my OHP is progressing at a snails pace if at all, but there's an inherent joy to getting that bar overhead, y'know? :)

Very true. I used deadlift form to move two huge planters on my porch the other day. Before I started lifting, I would have probably asked my husband to move them. Deadlifts are also useful if you shop at the big box wholesale stores.

I hate certain forms of deadlifts but I LOVE straight leg deadlifts and do those.

I love my deadlifts. Today was Deadlift day for me - and i walked outta that gym like the badass I proved myself to be.

Having said that - I'm doing Stronglifts - which means it was also OHP day. I hate that lift - I failed again (and I'm still on puny weights with that one).

I say let me rejoice in my deadlifts - I'm happy to let you claim OHP suprmacey. As long as one of the lifts makes you bounce out of that gym, beaming with pride in yourself, who cares which one it is??

I love deadlifts because you get to lift so much weight! So fun. I like squats, but they're much more technically demanding.

Ditto here...I don't hate them but they are no longer my faves...

I used to love squats...but eh...

I now love benching I think more than anything...

I did love Deads because to be able to lift that much weight is awesome....but it does tire you out esp the next day and I found I was often hungry afterwards...

For me it seems the one I like is the one I am improving the most on...

I feel the exact same way!!!
  • When I started deadlifting correctly, I'd feel it in my hamstrings the most the next day. I also haven't really seen the butt results with anything else that I see with deadlifts.

Every single word of this is exactly how I feel! :) Well said!
