Meditation
Saturday, Ordinary 26, Proper 21 brought Moses to face his loss—to be high upon Mt. Nebo and view the Promised Land. He wouldn’t enter with the Children of Israel because of his failure to obey God in yesterday’s lesson.
Some feel the punishment was harsh, because it was a simple tap versus speaking to the rock for water. But the real issue was that God wanted Moses to show the people that he would work in different ways. The ‘magic’ of miracles was not in the staff or rod, but in the power of God, which could be demonstrated through a thought, a word, an instrument or anything that God would choose.
Moses failed as a leader—God expected more of him. He was supposed to give the Children of Israel the true glimpse of God’s power. Because he repeated the action of tapping the rod, it would have been too easy to shift the glory to Moses or the stick and not credit God with the miracle. Leaders were never to misdirect their followers.
The New Testament lesson in Mark addressed the Jewish leaders, who challenged Jesus with
“28 They said, ‘Tell us! What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?’”
Jesus challenged them with a question about the authority of John the Baptist. Their deceitfulness showed quickly. They begged off the question, because they knew if they said John the Baptist’s authority was God, Jesus could ask them why they didn’t believe him and follow his teachings. If they declared John the Baptist wasn’t from God, but something else, they would risk their reputations with the people who loved John the Baptist and believed him. So, as leaders, they misdirected their followers by saying they didn’t know.
Jesus told them he wouldn’t tell them if they couldn’t be honest about recognizing the authority of God. The Jewish leaders were caught in their own deception and Jesus called them on it, in a most clever way. He answered their false-question with a question back that revealed their phoniness.
As leaders, we must be obedient to God’s word and trust that God will use us for his glory. We must never take credit or misdirect people into thinking other than God is the one who deserves the credit and glory.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13 And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.
14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, thank you for your faithfulness even when we are not always faithful. Help us to hunger to trust and obey you, and always give you the glory you deserve. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 26, Proper 21 shone the light on the results of disobedience. Moses lost out on the Promised Land because he failed to follow God’s direction precisely and as a result failed to adequately demonstrate God’s power and glory before the Children of Israel.
The New Testament leaders of the Jews also failed to lead their people properly. Instead of promoting John the Baptist and celebrating the presence of the Messiah in their midst, they looked for ways to undermine him and his authority—hence attempting to mislead the people.
The consequences of misleading or misdirecting the people are severe. Moses lost out on the Promised Land and the New Testament leaders were rejected by Jesus. He wouldn’t answer their questions, false ones that they were. He didn’t bring them into his inner circle. They missed out on fellowship with JESUS!
They opted for separation from Jesus and a disconnect from God, rather than lead the Jews properly. We must be careful that we don’t lead people astray, today.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
