Sunday, Ordinary 26, Proper 21 displayed the many ways that God was at work in the everyday lives of his people. The Psalmist told the story of Israel’s escape from Egypt and trek to the Promised Land, summarizing each of the miraculous events which took care of every challenge and need of the Hebrew people.
The Old Testament lesson in Exodus 17, detailed the first time the Children of Israel cried out against God because they couldn’t find water. The Lord asked Moses to strike a rock, using the same rod he had used to turn the Nile blood red, and out came pure water for all of them to drink. God provided for their needs, using a miracle to reveal his almighty power.
The New Testament lessons in Matthew and Philippians enumerated how believers should live—being unified in Christ with one mind and showing love and kindness as Christ did. In fact, believers were called upon to emulate Jesus, who was God, but didn’t strut around calling attention to it and using his God-powers to show off. He used his powers like God did in the Old Testament to provide for the people and to demonstrate the power of God, so people would believe.
Characteristics of believers—loving, kindly, unselfish and caring for others—not like the leaders of the Jews, who pretended to be good, and tried to trip Jesus up by asking with what authority he did his miracles. Jesus knew their phoniness and threw the question back at them. He asked what authority John the Baptist did his miracles and they were trapped into saying “I don’t know” or they would have to acknowledge his power came from God, as John the Baptist’s did.
God’s part is taking care of the needs of believers—every day. Our part is to be single minded—unified in Christ with love, kindness, unselfishness and goodness to others. Then we show our obedience to the will of God. And God will be able to use us to show his greatness to others.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Exodus 17:1-7
King James Version (KJV)
17 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? They be almost ready to stone me.
5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, you provide for our needs as you provided for the water to miraculously come from the rock when Moses tapped it. Help us to believe you will work in our lives, too. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 26, Proper 21 showed the wonders of God at work in the lives of the Hebrew people in both the Old Testament lessons in Exodus and the Psalm. God used the miracles to teach that they could trust God for all their needs. Each event revealed God’s greatness and taught them how they could trust.
The New Testament lessons in Matthew and Philippians showed the bad side of people who should know better (how to live as believers) and then specified the various ways that Christians should behave, but all coming down to copying Jesus’ manner and way. He was kind to sinners, not critical. He loved the seamier-side-of-life victims. He cared for the poor, the widows and orphans. Jesus was unselfish and humble. He was God, but didn’t lord it over others or use his power for his own benefit.
God used power and miracles to help people in need and to help them believe. The human part was to trust and obey. We can whine and complain when things go wrong or we can believe and trust God to work things out for us.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
