Sunday, Ordinary 27, Proper 22 packed the enormous Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, in the Old Testament lesson in Exodus; also the Psalmist’ call to praise for the heavens which declared the glory of God; and Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi about his status as a faithful Jew-Pharisee-convert to Christ follower and running the race to win God’s prize; and the New Testament Gospel (Matthew) lesson of the Parable of the Tenants in one day’s lectionary lesson.
The overriding theme was doing what was truly pleasing to God. The Ten Commandments established the core beliefs of the Judeo-Christian faith. Love God. Honor parents. Treat others fairly (with the specifics enumerated). The Psalmist praised God and asked that his meditations of his heart be acceptable to God (see the memory verse).
The Apostle Paul, in writing the Philippians, wanted to clarify the issues of following Jewish tradition those who wanted to make Jewish customs at a higher level of spirituality. Paul demonstrated that he could check every box in the Jewish column—no one could claim more accomplishments there. But he wanted them to understand that he counted all his zealous achievements as a loss compared to what he had gained with following Christ in the new way. His righteousness came from Christ, not his own attainments. Every day, he put away what he had done in the past, and pressed forward to improve himself, running the race and seeking the winning prize.
The New Testament Gospel lesson in Matthew was Jesus’ words to the religious leaders, the Pharisees. The Parable of the Tenants paralleled the evolution of life where God, as the ‘owner’ created a place for humans—a vineyard--and rented it to tenants and asked for remuneration, sent servants (prophets) which were persecuted and killed, so finally the owner/God sent his Son (Jesus) to represent him. The tenants threw the Son (Jesus) out and killed him and so the owner decided to take the vineyard back and rent it to other tenants (non-Jews)
The stone which the tenants rejected was the most important stone – the cornerstone that the rest of the building would be built from.
“The cornerstone (or foundation stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.” Wikipedia
The cornerstone was the first stone at the intersection of two walls. The rest of the entire building would be in line with the cornerstone. It established the perspective of the rest of the construction. Jesus would be the source for all righteousness and the standard for everyone to follow.
The Pharisees understood his meaning and sought to arrest him, but were foiled by the crowds who loved Jesus and wouldn’t tolerate Jesus being mistreated. The way of Christ set a standard for all to follow and it arose out of the Old Testament lesson of the Ten Commandments, but made life less about human achievement and more about grace.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Matthew 21:33-46
King James Version (KJV)
33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, thank you for giving us Jesus as our example and cornerstone. Help us to measure our actions in accordance with the standards he set for us. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Sunday, Ordinary 27, Proper 22 established the right and wrong ways of doing things from the Psalmist praise and prayer of asking for help, to the Ten Commandments, which have become the basis of many codes of behavior, to the New Testament Gospel which set Jesus as our cornerstone and to Paul’s stressing that though he was able to fulfill many of the requirements as a Jew, he didn’t count that as being important in the scheme of things.
Christ saved us. Through the grace of Jesus atoning sacrifice, we receive the benefits of the heirs of promise. We can count on Jesus to cover our sins and make us ready to be a part of the Kingdom of God. In the meantime, we press on, doing our best to please God and bring honor to his name.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
