Monday, Ordinary 27, Proper 22 lessons continued the law in the parallel version in Deuteronomy, clearly defining the key basic rules of a relationship with God and with others. The Psalmist sang of living by that law and having it make his life full of hope and promises. Things went better when he lived by the law.
The New Testament epistle from Peter addressed the distinctions of the early church believers. Peter, who was called the ‘rock’ by Jesus, spoke of him as the ‘living stone,’ something that might have seemed quite odd to those, who saw rocks as solid and lifeless. But Peter used the firm structure and added the uniqueness of Christ’s being resurrected and alive to show that the cornerstone that some people rejected as the Messiah, would be the true measure of the Kingdom of God.
Stones that some reject. When we were rehabbing our home, we went to a granite store for our kitchen countertops. While we were there, we discovered a box of granite pieces that were going to be discarded. When a granite sheet broke and couldn’t be used for a project, the pieces were left in the box and anyone was welcome to them. We loaded up our trunk with dozens of pieces of beautiful granite. Several places, we needed a transition from outside to inside. My husband used these pieces to create a mosaic entry of granite slabs. The end result was beautiful and to think it was made from rejected pieces.
An artist asked friends for any broken plates and dishes rather than dumping them in the trash. She would work the pieces into platters, bowls, trays, sculptures and more. When Michelangelo received his marble to sculpt, it is said he saw the life in the rock before he chiseled his first chunk. Such was the sculpture of David, King of Israel.
As great as all these artists were, the design of God was greater, using Jesus—as the cornerstone, who was rejected by the some of the people, and making it the foundation and source for the new faith that became known as Christianity. Believing in Jesus meant that yo would not be disappointed, ultimately.
Of course, the very thing that people rejected became a stumbling block for them—something that causes them to misstep or trip them up. They work so hard to avoid the Lord that they trip themselves up in the options they choose. Now some say Christians should not be a stumbling block, but the words can work in two ways. If by their living sacrifice they caused others to falter in their path towards evil, this would have been a good stumbling block. They were supposed to deter people from choosing wrong. However, Christians have been told not to be stumbling blocks for weaker believers, because of the restriction against leading someone astray.
Peter’s instruction was that believers were a royal priesthood, chosen to bear the good news to all, because they were called out of darkness into the light of God.
Our task is no less daunting today. We must be living sacrifices—spiritually—that we might be the light for others. We can be the source of informing people about the Living Rock for their salvation.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

1 Peter 2:4-10
King James Version (KJV)
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Prayer of Encouragement
Almighty God, for the many ways you keep your promises to us, we give you thanks and praise. For the love you have given us in your Son Jesus Christ, who is the Living Stone, the cornerstone on which all can be built, we give you thanks. Help us to spread the good news and live as shining examples of your love and grace. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Monday, Ordinary 27, Proper 22 celebrated the Law and how it positively influenced the Psalmist’s life. The Law of God was reiterated in Deuteronomy—the Ten Commandments stated again to show their importance. As any speaker knows, one should always say something more than once for it to be remembered.
But Peter, the pragmatic man of action, highlighted the fact that Jesus was a Living Stone that was rejected by some people, but God used him to be the foundation/cornerstone of the faith. God sees promise in things that people reject.
This could be encouraging for anyone of us feeling inadequate to the tasks. God can use what is rejected to be of greatest service. We’re in good company, when we find ourselves as spiritual sacrifices in the cause of Christ.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
