Just wondering how many people have read the graphics novels and how you feel the show stacks up against them.Currently I've made it through issue 85, and I had a big gap between issue 43 and the rest, so I had to go back and re-read the earlier ones to get an idea of how much the TV show has strayed from the original stuff. I still enjoy the TV show a lot, and obviously there are things that wouldn't/couldn't carry over to film, but man, those comics get BRUTAL in the 2nd series and beyond.

I've been meaning to start these. Hopefully I will soon. One of my bff's is a huge fan of the comics and says the show is just different enough to not know exactly whats going on/where they are going with things all the time. He seems to like it that way.

I have. I'm up to 89 at the moment.

The show started off staying relatively close to the graphic novels but they started drifting away after a few episodes. I would have preferred to have seen them staying closer to the graphic novels (but maybe just water down the violence for a TV audience).

Despite them straying from the graphic novels, I still love the TV show.

I look on the TV show like an adaptation of them. In order to make it more palatable to a wider audience they had to alter the direction of the story.

Well they said while making season 1 that they wanted to make the show "original" while still keeping the basic outline of the novels.
I like it just for the twists and turns and seeing how they adapt some parts of the novel into the show. I think it would feel.. maybe a little less exciting if it kept strictly to the novels.

I have read up to #84. I started reading the novels before the show and figured there was no way that they were going to be able to follow the story line very closely. That being said I like the show and the direction it is taking. I think a big part of that is because Robert Kirkland has been involved in both seasons. I hoping that at one point or another Michonne is introduced on the show just because she is such a bad *kitten*! Has one read the novel Rise of the Governor? I've been meaning to pick it up but haven't yet.

I collect the hardcover books, so Im up to w/e issue book 7 covers. I have Rise of the Governor and havent read it yet.
Im still trying to get over the idea of a novel based on how he came to be. Its a LOT of pages of mid-sized print. Its intimidating, despite being a fairly avid reader.

I LOVE the comics. I hate that my bf hasnt read em yet, but hes starting too asap. Then I dont have to hold in all my "OMG ____ did ___" after reading new books.

So, coming from someone who has only read books, and never graphic novels, where do you buy them?

The graphic novels section of a book store?

Well, online is cheaper and has the early books where as a comic store/book store may not have ALL the books

Amazon has "The Walking Dead: Compendium One" for $34.29 and this is the description...

Introducing the first eight volumes of the fan-favorite, New York Times Best Seller series collected into one massive paperback collection! Collects The Walking Dead #1-48. This is the perfect collection for any fan of the Emmy Award-winning television series on AMC: over one thousand pages chronicling the beginning of Robert Kirkman''s Eisner Award-winning continuing story of survival horror- from Rick Grimes'' waking up alone in a hospital, to him and his family seeking solace on Hershel''s farm, and the controversial introduction of Woodbury despot: The Governor. In a world ruled by the dead, we are finally forced to finally start living.

    Should I buy this??

Excellent. I have them all up as far as #89. You'll love them. There are some excellent plot lines in the comic books.

There are separate books? I thought the books were just 12 or so issues (of the comic) put together?

I got the The Walking Dead: Compendium One, for Christmas last year!

I'm definatley going to have to look into the graphic novels. Forgive me for saying this, but until this group started I honestly didn't realize the show was based on graphic novels. Looks like I have some catching up to do.

I never even heard of "Dead Island". I had to google it. Now it's on my "I want" list.

Nice way to encourage a "Zombie Apocalypse" addict :grumble:

You'll find that the TV show differs greatly from the comic books (the CDC in Atlanta story) but for Season 2 is switching back to being closer to the comic books.

Wow! The Shane Carl thing was crazy and the whole farm thing. Herschel is much more genial on the show and Carl and Andrea are way cooler in the comics.

Everyone is getting it on lol. Gotta say the whole Andrea Dale thing is kinda creepy when Andrea looks 20 and Dale has to be pushing 70 but I guess in that situation...

Just got to the prison and the daughter boyfriend thing...

    I'm loving this!!!

I just looked up Compendium One on Amazon. It only covers as far as Issue 48. You are going to have to catch up after that. There are some excellent plot lines coming up in Issues 49 to 90. Don't worry, I'm not going to give them away.
