So with family, work and housework, how do you fit in a workout?

  • This is a really tough question. One that I have been trying to figure out since the beginning of September!

As a single mom I have the challenge of not having someone to help with the boys when they are with me. However, on the flip side, they are with their dad (or his parents) every other weekend.

Before it began getting cold, Mondays were family fitness night. I packed a picnic and we went striaght to the park after I got off work. We ate, then walked the 3/4 mile trail. I then let them plan on the play ground. I would do squats or walk laps around the playground while they were playing.

Wednesday nights I take zumba at the rec center. There is babysitter for $3 per hour per kid.

Tuesdays and Thursdays I have been taking yoga at work.

Now for the other days.... I have been trying to get up in the morning to run. It's just not working so well. We only had one TV in our house until September as well. A friend gave me her old college TV. I bought a VHS player at a garage sale as I had a ton of VHS tapes (had sold our player but not the tapes). I set it up in the basement by my treadmill. After dinner and homework, if all went smoothly, the kids can watch a little bit of a show while I run.

I'm finding other things are falling behind. I am still working out the balance of everything.

I agree, it seems when I don't work out, I am caught up on everything. If I work out, I feel great, but the house life suffers. Sometimes it seems like working out is so not worth it. I come home from the gym, or a walk, or doing a DVD, then the house is trashed, not enough time to get it back up to par before bed.

I've had the same problems and decided I shouldn't be the only one who has to clean the house. I'm not the only one who lives in it so it simply isn't a fair expectation for anyone (me or them) to have of me. So I showed my 8 year old how to separate her laundry for wash day and how to fold her clothes and where to put them when they're finished, I also showed her how to make her bed and dust. It only took one laundry day for her to learn everything. I worked out a schedule with my husband, I cook the majority of the meals in the home so he now washes the majority of the dishes. He gets Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun and I take Tues/Thur/Sat, he cleans his office and our bathroom and I clean the kitchen and our daughter's bathroom, he takes our room and I take the family room. If you have others in the home use your resources. Even the youngest can and should help, it is their home too and they should take pride in its cleanliness as well.
    Good Luck Ladies.
