I usually buy from Minnesota companies when it is an option. However, as I nearly bought Crystal Sugar today without thinking about it, I wanted to let you guys know, if you're getting ready for Christmas/Holiday/Fall baking.
Crystal Sugar locked out their employees when the employees didn't approve a contract they were offered. The result is that the Minnesota workers are unemployed. The North Dakota workers are unemployed too, but due to ND laws, they aren't even getting unemployment payments.
I'm thinking about all the families of locked out sugar workers, as this has gone on for more than a couple months (according to my unreliable memory). It will not be a good Christmas for them. So. I won't cross a picket line, and I chose not to cross one with my holiday baking today either.
Make your own choices about what sugar you buy (or if you don't buy sugar at all, which is admirable). I just wanted to let you know that this is still going on.
