Tummy troubles when running

I'm having real issues with my tummy when running long distances, today I had to stop running and use a toilet in a garage because I couldn't run any further. I also often end up feeling sick for the rest of the day after my run.

Any ideas on how I can reduce this as I'm fed up of taking loperamide or pepto-bismol regularly (it does me no good!)

No suggestions, but I find on race days I'm the same way. My new training is simply to carb load the week before the race and run only with water. I'm currently running half's only on water it's been OK but this isn't t race pace for me since it's only training.

How far are you running? You may try to do things like give up dairy or high fiber foods the day before your long runs.
  • I got prescription Lomotil that I take before all my long runs. It's similar to loperamide but a stronger. Good luck!

are you drinking lots of water? are you eating before?

I find I have stomach issues if I don't drink enough water before a run especially if it is going to be a long run. I need to eat before my runs as well (not at least an hour before so) or I get sick, too.

    good luck!

    Thank you for your replies.

mlb929 - I do think anxiety may contribute to it now so am trying to run the same routes often. I too only run on water with jelly beans for emergencies as I tend to get dizzy. I found sports drinks didn't sit well in my stomach. Run lengths vary between 3.5 miles up to 15 currently but I am working towards a full marathon.

adhillman01- Loperamide currently seems to work but I just don't think it's doing me good taking it numerous times a week!

urbanhippierunner- I drink tonnes of water and tend to eat a piece of toast with jam 1.5 hrs before running.

Just need to man up and get on with it I think!

I have to start taking Imodium early in the morning before long runs.. and sometimes I have to take more than one. I carry it with me...just in case.
