You guys have finally inspired me to make my free appointment with a personal trainer. I'm going tomorrow (Wednesday) morning and I've asked to show me around the free weights section. I'll let you know how it goes!

  • good going! ask him about all the machines too! (you would be surprised how sometimes you look at a piece of equipment and can't figure out HOW you are sposed to get into it!)

I actually know how to use the machines fairly well. I took a class in college called "fitness center" for my PE credit and I belonged to Curves for 2 years back in 2005 (which worked well for me and I got very fit) but have since had another baby and was no longer going to the gym =)

Good for you! I know they are pricey, but I paid for 12 sessions with a trainer, too. Great money spent. She taught me a ton about exercises (with free weights and with machines) and proper form. They're lessons you can take with you forever. :)

    Have fun and enjoy it!

Haha, that's great. :) The first session is always the hardest ...

Don't feel shy about asking them to slow down. Most are there to push you to try harder, reach further, etc., but if you really are having problems (difficulty catching your breath, etc.), just let them know. The good trainers would rather you be safe and comfortable (but not TOO comfortable ;) ). I was really out of shape when I started with a trainer, and there were a couple sessions at the beginning where I had to ask her to just pause for a minute because I felt like vomiting. She was concerned, but let me be until I drank more water and felt ready to go on. Yeah, I was a real wuss.

If they try to make you stand on a bosu ball with weights, walk out
If they tell you to change your routine to keep "muscle confusion", walk out.
If they have you do anything other than 5 reps at high weight after warming up using compound movements, walk out.
the only time isolation exercises are needed are if you have joint issues, imbalence between muscles or injuries.
check out stronglifts 5x5 you can google or check the thread here at MFP, no group for it yet that I know of.
    good luck.
