Question on becoming a zombie

So...we have these zombies that eat people. That IS their food - living or recently living flesh. So how does someone become a zombie and not become a meal? If they get close enough to be contaminated with zombie cooties, why aren't they consumed by these ravenous creatures? And yet, we have all these zombies with minimal damage to their form, which means they didn't get eaten.

Why?

I always assumed that they were bitten, but were able to get away, or killed the Zombie that bit them.

Yep, take Jim and Amy for example. They were both bit, but not eaten. Then they turned. (well, we assume Jim turned, as he was left by side of the road). They got bit, then got away. Unlike Otis who was rendered immobile and became a buffet for walkers.
  • Seem that the walking dead follows the zombie survival guide pretty well.. People become zombies by getting infected with the the Solanum virus ( http://zombie.wikia.com/wiki/Solanum ). If you are bitten and survive the inital attack this allows the virus the circulate within your system .. If you are killed during the attack you just become a walkers dinner

^^^^^^This is pretty much the way I thought. If someone was attacked/bitten and couldn't escape they'd be dinner for any and all walkers in the vicinity.
