Still a newbie runner here (Started in August), currently I wear the same running shoes on the trail, on the sidewalk, and on the treadmill (only when I have to.)

Should I have more than one pair of shoes?

I am getting the Nike Pegasus for Christmas.

I have 3 pairs of shoes but I know people with at least 10 pairs, probably more!

I have a pair of Nike road shoes that are really cushioned but would be useless on the soft trails around here, a pair of Inov8 fell running shoes which are studded and give superb grip in soft stuff but would wear down quickly if I ran on hard trails and roads, and a pair of asics gore-tex trail shoes which are better for the harder trails and if my route has a mixture of trail and road.

If I ran in my road shoes on the trails in my neck of the woods i would risk injury by slipping due to the lack of grip. I guess it depends on what the trails are like around your way, if you run on harder trails you can probably get away with wearing road shoes for the time being, if the trails are a bit softer I would personally get some shoes with a bit more grip (make sure part of the tread has studs or bars to grab a hold in the muddy areas).

Incidentally, my road shoes are Nike Pegasus+28 and are the most comfortable road shoes I've ever had :)

Most people don't *need* a new pair of shoes... but it is a great excuse to get them. It really depends on the trails and how you run. If you're road shoes don't offer enough protection or traction, then I'd consider a dedicated pair of trail shoes. If you're doing fine with the shoes you've got, then keep going.
