What do you usually do the days/week to recover from a long distance race? How soon after do you do another run, how many miles do you do to start?

I just did the Las Vegas half marathon on Sunday. The race itself was an absolute nightmare, too many people, poorly organized, they ran out of swag bags, tshirts and medals for some participants...my garmin said we actually ran 13.8 miles due to the ridiculous amount of zigzagging we had to do weaving in and out of people trying to pass them.

Being in Vegas, I have had zero downtime, its go go go ~ going home tomorrow and then I plan to start recovery!

i just go by how i feel...I ran 3 miles this morning and will probably lift tonight too. I will no do a long run this week, but will resume normal training next week (2 speed runs and 1 fast run totaling ~20-25 miles)

listen to how you feel :)

Some training programs will include a recovery week after the race. For the Goofy Race & a Half plan, the program will have me running 3 miles (I think) on Tuesday, which is only 2 days after the marathon (3 days after the half). Even if you didn't follow a training plan for your race, it can't hurt to look at a few and see what is recommended for recovery. Personally, after my last half, I went out and ran 15 two or three days later, but by that point I had made up my mind to train for Disney, and I was working on a severely shortened training schedule.

Depends on the race distance and effort required for it and how you feel. After my marathon I was back to light running by that next wednesday or thursday. I had a brutal trail race and was on a recovery run after 1 full day off.
