Parents and onlookers are reportedly still coming to grips with the horrific scene they witnessed over the weekend at a youth basketball tournament game in America. Media outlets throughout the state of Minnesota claim the 52-year-old man was arrested and charged with domestic assault after he reportedly grabbed his son and punched him in the face after the teenager’s team lost their game. Witnesses reported seeing the man and his son walking down a hallway at the school when the father grabbed the boy with one arm while punching him in the face with the other. Other parents had to physically intervene before the disturbing incident was broken up. Police were also called. The offending man was then arrested and spent the night in jail before posting $10,000 (USD) bail. "This assault is an example of particularly disturbing adult behavior on so many levels," a police chief later told reporters. "Parents attending youth sports events have such a great opportunity to be a positive role model for kids, and that is clearly not what happened here." If charged, the man faces a $3,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
After reading this do you consider a $3,000 dollar fine and up to 90 days in jail a harsh enough punishment? What about doing mandatory anger management and child abuse classes for at least three years, as well as having to check in monthly with CPS. What do you think this man should have to do?

Who posted bail for him is the question! Id hope none of his family did. You can bet that part of his plea agreement will be mandatory anger management classes, CPS will be heavily invovled as this has made national news. He wont serve 90, will pay the fines over an extended period and will have supervised visits for a while...its the way the system works0

I'm a world class cynic. I figure that dude is a prick on a level that can't be helped.
No reason to waste effort on counseling for him. The kid well be the one who needs it.
If I could i'd simply tell the kid, "You're nearly 18. That's your freedom waiting. Get out and you don't ever have to look back."0 -

Anger management and child abuse classes are basically a joke, people do them to get out of paying higher fines and jail time. I am assuming he will end up doing at least one or both as part of his plea agreement. Also, CPS could require them before he can have visitation and/or custody of his son again. I used to work at a counseling center that held the AM classes. The State's Attorney did not even care how seriously people took them, as long as they paid their entry fee and showed up 5 nights in a row, they got credit for it.
I understand this could be treated differently in other areas, though, so I apologize in advance if this is not accurate everywhere.0 -

Anyway, to your original question: is 90 days and $3000 a harsh enough punishment?
For what? To deter a repeat incident? To generate remorse? Tough answer. The media attention changes the dynamic doesn't it?
I don't think what this guy did was OK at all. But "punching someone in the face" can mean a lot of things. We are quick to jump on the condemnation bandwagon because a father punching his kid in the face is pretty horrible. The man lost his cool and snapped. Does he have a history of violence toward his family? Was this an isolated incident? Did he really just sucker punch the kid? Or was it an angry scuffle where someone was inadvertently hit in the face? (there is a huge spectrum of things that *could* have happened with all the variations in between)
There will lots of attention on parents taking sports too seriously, etc. but the sad thing for me is that this kid has to deal with all the attention. I wonder what his relationship was like with his dad before all of this. I can't imagine this story is making it any better. Sure, we can all assume the dad was a giant prick to his kid(s) and say "lock him up - he deserves harsh punishment" but I think that's emotionally reacting to the idea of a loud-mouthed belligerent dad his kid's sporting event. I think he is accountable for his actions, for sure. He should charged with assault of a minor. If 90 days and $3000 is the standard punishment for that, then it is appropriate.
Lastly, what are child abuse classes? I've never heard of such a thing. I know anger management classes. What are child abuse classes?0 -
They make parents sit in a room and they tell them: don't abuse your children! Don't molest!
Haven't you seen South Park?0
